RE Curriculum at St Wulstan's
At St Wulstan’s Catholic Primary School, Religious Education is at the heart of our curriculum and the life of our school. We fulfil the requirements of the Religious Education Directory published by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, teaching in accordance with the Catholic Church.
We follow our new Religious Education curriculum, Discerning Disciples. Through engaging lessons, prayer, reflection and carefully chosen activities, pupils deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith. Learning is adapted to meet the needs of every child and provides opportunities for pupils to ask meaningful questions, make connections and consider how faith guides the way we live.
Our aim is to help every child grow in knowledge, faith and love, developing a closer relationship with God and a greater understanding of their responsibility towards others and the world around them.
The curriculum is organised into six branches, taught progressively across the school year.
Pupils explore the wonder of God’s creation and learn about the special relationship—or covenant—between God and humanity. They consider our responsibility to care for one another and to be good stewards of our common home.
Through Scripture, pupils encounter the prophets of the Old Testament and discover how they prepared God’s people for the coming of Jesus. This branch focuses particularly on the seasons of Advent and Christmas and the fulfilment of God’s promises.
Pupils learn about the life and ministry of Jesus, from his work in Galilee to his journey towards Jerusalem. They explore his teachings and miracles, considering what his example means for Christians today.
This branch takes pupils through the seasons of Lent and Easter. They reflect on Jesus’ journey to the Cross, his death and Resurrection, and the hope, forgiveness and new life at the heart of the Easter message.
Pupils explore the events that followed the Resurrection, including the Ascension and Pentecost. They learn how the Holy Spirit strengthened the first disciples and how the Church continues Jesus’ mission throughout the world today.
Pupils learn about the importance of dialogue, respect and encounter with others. They explore the beliefs, traditions and practices of other Christian denominations, faiths and worldviews, developing an appreciation of the dignity of every person and the rich diversity of our local and global communities.
Respect for people of all faiths and cultures is an important part of our Catholic mission. Pupils learn about other religions with sensitivity and integrity, exploring their beliefs, traditions, celebrations and ways of life in their own right.
Through Dialogue and Encounter, as well as wider school activities, pupils learn about the principal religions represented in Great Britain and the faiths and cultures within our own school community. Opportunities for discussion, celebration and shared learning help children appreciate diversity, challenge prejudice and recognise the values that unite us.
These experiences support our pupils in becoming compassionate, respectful and responsible citizens who are able to live out the Gospel values of love, dignity, justice and peace in an increasingly diverse world.
