Message From Mrs Bury and Mrs Warnett

Yesterday, we celebrated a lovely start-of-year Mass together as a school community. It was wonderful to come together in prayer and reflection, giving thanks for the month gone by and looking ahead with hope to all that this new school year will bring.

A heartfelt thank you to all our families and members of the parish who joined us. Your presence makes these celebrations particularly special and is a lovely reminder of the strong links between our school, families and parish community.

Our next Mass will be on Friday 9th October, when Year 6 will lead us in their class Mass.

On Friday 23rd October, we will come together for our Harvest Mass. Please look out for more information soon about how families can support our CAFOD appeal as part of our Harvest celebrations.

Please note that there will be no Mass on Friday 16th October.

We look forward to continuing to gather together in faith, prayer and thanksgiving throughout the year.

Weekly Round Up

Reception & Year 1

Reception and Year 1 have had another busy and enjoyable week! In Maths, Year 1 have been ordering numbers and using number lines. They particularly enjoyed becoming a human number line and working together to put themselves in the correct order! Reception have been exploring the number 4 and finding different ways that 4 can be made.

In English, we have been enjoying Dear Zoo. The children had lots of fun discussing the different animals in the story and deciding which would make suitable – or very unsuitable – pets!

In Science, the children became investigators as they tested different materials to find out which would be the best for making a raincoat. In Geography, they have been learning that the United Kingdom is an island and is surrounded by water.

Year 2 and 3

Poetry has been our focus this week as National Poetry Day is on Thursday 1st October. The class have had a wonderful time this week in English as they learn about performance poetry. The children developed their fluency, intonation, expression and understanding of how to inject excitement and interest as they read aloud by working on a class performance of 'The Treasures' by Claire Bevan. The children worked as a whole class and in small groups to create a performance which they enjoyed sharing with the rest of the school on National Poetry Day. The children are always delighted when their teachers read from their class poetry book, so it was no surprise to see how much they enjoyed their work this week. Well done on a super, joy-filled performance!

The class had a focus on online safety this week in computing and have discussed the idea what people may be different online and offline. The children thought hard about this learning and made sensible suggestions about how we behave online.

It was lovely to see so many of the class at Churchfields last weekend! Although we didn't win, it was a wonderful experience for the children and we really appreciated the generosity of Churchfields in giving each child a free adult and child ticket to their Fun Farm (worth £17 each!). A big 'Thank you' to Churchfields for giving us such a fun time. A perfect autumn activity for our school community!

Year 4/5

Year 4 and Year 5 have worked incredibly hard this week and have impressed Mr Tasker with their efforts. In maths, the children have used written methods to add and subtract numbers. After only a few calculations, the children recalled the methods from last year and were able to independently and confidently complete calculations using numbers up to 999,999. In design and technology, the children measured, cut and coloured components before assembling them using a lever mechanism to show Jack and Jill moving up a hill. They followed a set of instructions and used a split pin and card to secure the lever, then used spacers to allow the lever to move and stop effectively behind the hill. For National Poetry Day, the children learnt a poem by Francis Duggan called 'The Wonders of Nature'. The children created pieces of artwork in groups that reflected the themes in each stanza and then shared this with the school. Well done to the children that read and shared their work, a great experience to grow in confidence when reading to an audience.

Year 6

What another busy and exciting week it has been in Year 6!
In Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of formal written methods for addition and subtraction. We have also begun using our times table knowledge to identify and find common factors between numbers. As Scientists, we continued our learning about light and investigated the fascinating concept of refraction, exploring how light changes direction when it travels through different materials.
In RE, we discussed the importance of Baptism and the promises that are made during this sacrament. We also reflected on how Christians can uphold these promises throughout their lives through their actions and choices. We continued our History learning, by beginning to look at what life was like for people working in coal mines during the Industrial Revolution. We explored why towns developed near coalfields and considered the importance of coal and iron in driving industrial growth and change.
On Thursday, we celebrated National Poetry Day by studying the poem I Wonder by Jeannie Kirby. Year 6 then had a go at composing their own versions. A number of children performed their poems to the class, and they were incredibly creative, imaginative and thought-provoking. Well done to everyone who shared their work!

Next week, Year 6 will be undertaking training through the School Sports Partnership to become either a Wellbeing Champion, Play Leader or member of our Sports Crew. We are excited to see the children develop their leadership skills and take on these important roles within our school community.

Have a lovely weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone next week, ready to work hard and continue their fantastic learning!

PTA Fundraiser - Christmas Products with your child's design on them

Yes, it's that time of year again!  Your child will be bringing home a leaflet on Monday 5 October regarding the Xmas4Schools products, which you will be able to purchase, with your child's design on them.  Along with the leaflet, will be a sheet with their design on it.  On the back of this is a form for you to complete.  £1 from the sale of each product goes to our PTA fundraising account.

This is a new company we are using.  This is how the process works:

  1. Leaflet and children's design go home to parents on Monday 5 October.
  2. If you would like to order products, please return your child's design (with completed form on the reverse) to school NO LATER THAN MONDAY 19TH OCTOBER.  You don't order at this stage, just return the form.
  3. You will then receive a text or email from the company containing your order link which you can follow to your child's ordering portal.  From here, you can place your order and make payment.
