KIND HEARTS AND A HUNGER FOR JUSTICE

Online safety is an essential concern for us all in today’s digital world, where children have easy access to the internet through phones, tablets, and computers. As educators and parents we should take an active role by setting clear rules about screen time, monitoring the apps and websites our children use, and by having open conversations about potential risks such as cyberbullying. Using parental controls and privacy settings can add an extra layer of protection, but building trust is just as important, children should feel comfortable reporting anything that makes them uneasy. Encouraging responsible behaviour, like not sharing personal information and thinking critically about what they see online, helps children develop the skills they need to navigate the internet safely and confidently.
To help you support the children we have added some useful online support documents to our website.

Reception

Reception have been working incredibly hard this term and having lots of fun along the way! In English, they have been focusing on traditional tales and have written some lovely sentences to accompany familiar stories. In Maths, the children have been building their confidence by finding missing numbers and exploring both 2D and 3D shapes. In Geography, they have been learning about the differences between cities and the countryside.

In Science, the class have been learning about the different parts of plants and have enjoyed observing how their own plants have grown over time. In RE, they have been thoughtfully considering how the disciples might have felt when Jesus returned to Earth, sharing some lovely ideas and reflections. In Art, the children have been exploring the work of Sheila Hicks and creating their own colourful collages inspired by her style.

During Forest School, the children enjoyed a wide range of exciting activities including den building, making natural paints, and using drills to create wooden blocks before weaving.

KS1

Year 1 and 2 have been reading 'The Koala Who Could' this week and have written some really beautiful character descriptions of Kevin the koala. Mrs Price, Mrs Harris and Mrs Tasker have thoroughly enjoyed reading them and are so proud of the progress in the children' writing as we get closer to the end of the school year. In RE, the children read the story of Doubting Thomas and worked hard to develop their understanding of what it means to 'doubt' something. The children were keen to use that word in their own speaking which was great to hear! In science, the class have been taking measurements of the weather now that it is spring. They are learning how to use a rain gauge and a thermometer to record the weather each day. The class are enjoying visiting the school library and have chosen some lovely new books to take home and share. They can't wait to visit Stourport Library again soon! The children have enjoyed growing cress in a beautiful display this week and finally tried some at the end of the week when it had grown enough. Some smelt it to see what it might taste like and lots of others snipped their own to try. We love seeing the children try new things! Lots of the children are keen to start growing cress or other plants at home which will be such a help in their learning as they will be starting more work on plants in science very soon.

In this week's forest school session with Year 1 and 2, we provided opportunities for the children to develop their confidence within the forest and to recognise the importance of conservation and stewardship. The children were shown how to move large branches safely to add to the wildlife corridors made by previous classes. We then enjoyed a game of ‘The Floor is Lava’ with some excellent and creative ways of keeping ourselves off the ground. The children were then able to chose to either litter pick the field and forest areas, resulting in two bags or litter collected or create ‘leaf wands’ by collecting leaves and flowers. The children were under strict instructions not to turn their parents, carers or siblings into frogs or rabbits when casting spells!

Year 3 and Year 4

The children has worked well this week and have again been enjoying opportunities to work outside with the good weather. In art this week, the children explored 'carving' and how shape and form can be changed through this technique. They were inspired by Barbara Hepworth's sculptures and used different tools to shape and carve bars of soap trying to create a design they sketched beforehand. In maths this week, the children have moved on to telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes and then the nearest minute. The children recognised the importance of being able to tell the time in their everyday lives and they are becoming more confident reading times on an analogue clock. In our writing lessons this week, the children have enjoyed reading and retelling another Greek myth 'Daedalus and Icarus'. The children composed some excellent piece of work containing short and long sentences, adverbs ending with -ly and personification for description. They worked incredibly hard and should be very proud of their efforts this week. Finally in our history lesson this week, the children researched facts about Alexander the Great and the impact his empire had on Greece and surrounding regions. The children were really engaged with this leader and were asking excellent questions about the type of leader they thought he was. Well done, Year 3 and Year 4!
Year 5

Year 5 have had another busy and productive week across the curriculum. In Maths, the children have been working hard on rounding decimals to one decimal place and have shown growing confidence with this skill. Next week, they will move on to percentages and begin to understand the relationship between decimals, fractions and percentages. In English, Year 5 have started an exciting new text, Idia of the Benin Kingdom by Ekiuwa Aire. This inspiring story explores the life of Queen Idia, and the children have approached their learning with great curiosity and creativity. They have been focusing on using show not tell to describe setting and atmosphere in order to engage their reader, and Miss Homsin has been incredibly impressed with the quality of their ideas and writing.

In Geography, Year 5 have taken on the role of travel agents, researching the beautiful country of Benin and exploring major cities such as Porto-Novo and Cotonou. In Art, the children have stepped into the role of architects, learning about the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser and designing their own houses inspired by his unique style, including spirals and imaginative patterns. In PE, the children have impressed both Miss Homsin and Miss Gillum with their developing tennis skills, particularly when practising rallies, backhand and forehand shots. Well done for an excellent week Year 5, keep up the hard work.

Year 6

Year 6 have had a great week and have continued their hard work in preparation for their SATs. The children have also been continuing their Confirmation work, with a focus on the first Pope of the Catholic Church, Saint Peter.

The Year 6 children led a lovely class Mass this morning—well done to everyone who read so wonderfully. In PE, the children had a great lesson with Miss Gillam earlier in the week and really impressed her with their backhand technique. Year 6 then ended Friday with a fun game of cricket – Miss McGowan said how pleased she was to see the communication skills improving and the positive impact that this has on the children’s game.

Next week, the children will focus on revision and making sure that they feel ready for their assessments the following week. Home learning has been set on Century – this is all linked to arithmetic, spelling, grammar and reading. All children have their log on details, but if you have any problems, please let Miss McGowan know. Please also look out for a letter next week that will give you all more details about the upcoming assessment week.
