Message from Mrs Brocklesby

Next week Year 6 will be performing the end-of-year play. I have greatly enjoyed hearing the children sing and rehearse, and I can confidently assure you that you are in for a real treat. We will also be holding Sports Day, and we are currently monitoring the heat to ensure that all appropriate safety measures are in place. We will keep you updated regarding any changes.

As we prepare for the new school year, the children will also have the opportunity to spend time preparing for and transitioning into their new year groups, helping to ensure a smooth and positive start in September.

Message from Mrs Warnett

Reception

Reception have had another exciting and busy week of learning. In English, the children have enjoyed reading The Rainbow Fish, using the story to inspire their discussions, writing and creative activities. In Maths, they explored capacity by becoming potion makers, carefully measuring, pouring and comparing different amounts while developing their mathematical vocabulary. During PE, the children have continued to develop their athletic skills and have been practising enthusiastically for Sports Day. In Forest School, they were introduced to using palm drills safely, showing great concentration and perseverance as they created holes in pieces of wood. In Art, the children explored colour mixing, experimenting with different combinations to create their own unique pieces of artwork. It has been wonderful to see their confidence, creativity and teamwork continue to grow as we approach the end of a fantastic year in Reception.

KS1

KS1 had a wonderful Thursday morning workshop with Hayley and Kat from the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. They started the day by having a look at some model minibeasts and studying the number of legs, wings and colours of the different creatures. Then, they went outside and learnt about minibeasts habitats and what they need to survive through a roleplay game where they acted as the different creatures. After that, the children came back inside and worked in pairs to make some beautiful leaf creatures using fallen leaves from field maple, oak, hazel and apple trees. These were photocopied to take home. After play time the children enjoyed going out on the bank outside Reception to do some minibeast hunting. They found lots of interesting creatures such as caterpillars, damsel flies, spiders, beetles and grasshoppers! Finally, the children brought a selection of specimens back into the classroom to look under the microscope before lunch. Thank you very much to the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust for providing such a fascinating and hands-on morning for us, and to the children for their excellent behaviour, questions and for treating the wildlife with such care.

Year 3 and 4

The children have enjoyed performing their dance this week for the Year 6 production and have shown great enthusiasm and effort in their rehearsals. The have been able to remember their timings, words to the song and dance moves, embracing their first opportunity of performing on the big stage in Key Stage Two. In design and technology, the children have been designing and building prototypes for their countdown timers. They have also recalled their coding skills to programme and Micro:bit to flash and show symbols to get the users attention. The children completed their unit on 'Shape' this week in maths, using mirrors and folding techniques to find lines of symmetry on 2-D shapes and complete symmetrical patterns. In geography this week, the children have designed tourist brochures for Greek islands by researching the landscapes, settlement locations and how locals use the land and seas. The children are looking forward to many exciting opportunities next week and are looking forward to sharing their talents with families and friends.

Year 5

Year 5 have had another busy and productive week!

In RE, the children have completed their learning on The Work of the Apostles. They approached this topic thoughtfully, showing excellent reflection and discussion throughout their lessons. They have also begun their new topic on Marriage and Holy Orders, where they are exploring the importance of these sacraments within the Church.

In Maths, the children have finished their work on negative numbers and have now started learning about converting units of measurement. They have worked hard to apply their understanding to a range of practical and problem-solving activities.

In PE, the children have been practising for Sports Day with Miss Gillum. They have shown great enthusiasm, teamwork, and determination while preparing for the different events.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead.

Year 6

As we head towards the end of Year 6, the children have continued to work hard and have been busy practising for their end-of-year performance of Madagascar. They have been truly amazing and dedicated to their roles, and continue to show enthusiasm throughout rehearsals.
In Science, the children have been learning about the theory of evolution and have researched the scientist Charles Darwin. They then looked closely at natural selection and considered how species adapt over time. In Geography, the children have been comparing the locations of Worcestershire and Hawaii, thinking about the similarities and differences between them. They explored a range of features, including physical and human geography, infrastructure, culture and population.
For this week’s Health Kick with Kidderminster Harriers, the children focused on dental health and the importance of looking after our teeth. The children then had a fantastic time in Forest School with Mr Tasker, where they made fire safely and responsibly. They also enjoyed toasting s’mores by the fire and playing some fun games in the forest.

Next week, we have the final few secondary school transition days, and then we will look forward to seeing everybody back at St Wulstan’s for Sports Day and our end-of-year performance.

Well done, Year 6 - keep up the fabulous work!
