KIND HEARTS AND A HUNGER FOR JUSTICE
Welcome to this week’s newsletter! It’s been another busy and exciting week at Saint Wulstan's, filled with learning, creativity, and achievement. Thank you to all families for your continued support.
As we move into next week, Year 6 will be taking their SATs. We want to reassure parents that this is a celebration of everyone’s hard work and progress throughout the year. The children have been well prepared, and we are incredibly proud of their effort, resilience, and positive attitude.
We would like to remind parents and carers about the range of helpful resources available from the NSPCC. Their free parent leaflets and guidance cover a wide range of topics including online safety, emotional wellbeing, managing difficult conversations, supporting children through change, and advice for different age groups. Resources such as Look, Say, Sing, Play, Talk PANTS, and guidance on leaving children home alone are designed to help families keep children safe and support healthy development. As a school, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is our highest priority. We work closely with families and external agencies to ensure that all pupils feel safe, supported, and listened to both in school and beyond. We encourage parents and carers to make use of these valuable NSPCC resources, which can be accessed here: NSPCC Parent Leaflets
It is important we all work together to safeguard our children by promoting online safety and helping children develop safe and responsible digital habits. Keeping pupils safe online is an important part of our safeguarding role, and we are committed to working in partnership with families to support children both at school and at home. Next week, we will be sharing information with parents and carers about an online safety course designed to provide practical advice, guidance, and support for keeping children safe in the digital world. We encourage all families to take part and look out for further details coming soon.

Inspired by the beautifully illustrated book Camille and the Sunflowers, the children explored Van Gogh’s unique style and created their own colourful masterpieces. In English, the children have been using the story The Little Red Hen to write sentences about the events in the book. They have also enjoyed discussing the importance of helping others and working together. In Maths, the children have been deepening their understanding of numbers by ordering numbers to 10 and beyond, developing both their confidence and mathematical reasoning skills. During Forest School, the children made medallions using wooden disks and decorated them beautifully with natural resources collected from the outdoor environment. In PSHE, the children have been discussing their roles within the classroom and wider community, thinking carefully about how their actions can positively impact others.
KS1
Year 1 and 2 have continued to make us proud with their amazing writing this week, creating beautiful retells of 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. Year 1 writers have been working on writing questions starting with 'Where' and 'Who' in their stories whilst Year 2 writers have been writing lists of adjectives in sentences, using commas. Some children were especially proud as they look their wonderful pieces to show to Mrs Warnett. Well done! In maths, the class have moved on to learning about fractions and have started to identify and find half of shapes and amounts (such as half of 12). In art, the children have been creating 3D sculptures and were so excited to take their work so far home to show their families. They look lovely and were impressively made. In PSHE, the class ordered life cycles from being a baby to growing into an adult. The class discussed changes as they grow and created detailed pupil passports to start to prepare them for the thought of moving up a year group next term. The children talked with great maturity about experiencing changes in their own lives and how this makes them feel. It was lovely to hear how positive they were as they talked about their achievements and successes this academic year. Finally, the class have welcomed a new student teacher, Miss Moran, to the class this week She will be working with the class for many weeks of the summer term.
Year 3 and 4
This week, the children have enjoyed learning about ancient Greece in their reading lessons. The children have been developing their reading skills to retrieve facts and information to answer questions, along with becoming more confident recognising key words and phrases in texts to help them find the answers for the questions. In maths, the children have been continuing their efforts to tell the time and have moved to digital time. The children have been converting time using 12-hour and 24-hour clocks and converting between analogue and digital clocks. In art, the children used wires to create sculptures. They developed their knowledge of bending, twisting and looping wire to create different objects. In science, the children have started their unit of classifying animals. They were asked to group animals into the five main groups learnt from Year 1 and then began using classification keys to help sort animals into groups using key characteristics. The children looked at the effects alcohol, drugs and tobacco has on the body and how intaking these can be harmful to the body in their PHSE lesson this week. They asked excellent and appropriate questions and showed an understanding of the importance of looking after our bodies. What a busy week! Well done, children.
Year 5
This week in Year 5, the children have worked incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum. In Maths, Year 5 completed their unit on decimals and percentages and showed great resilience and determination throughout their learning. Next week, the children will move on to a new topic focusing on measurement and shape. In English, Year 5 have continued studying Idia of the Benin Kingdom, focusing on sentence structure and how varying sentence lengths and types can be used to create suspense within a narrative. Miss Homsin has been so impressed with the children’s creativity and the mature ideas they have included in their writing.
In Science, Year 5 have been exploring the different ways plants reproduce. The children enjoyed learning that some plants, such as spider plants, can reproduce without two parent plants and are able to create clones of themselves through tubers. In Art, the children have continued studying the work of Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and explored how his colourful and unusual designs inspired buildings in Austria. In PE, Year 5 have continued developing their tennis skills with Miss Gillum, showing excellent teamwork and perseverance. To end the week, Year 5 became “Planet Protectors” in honour of David Attenborough turning 100. The children designed thoughtful and informative posters inspired by Sir David’s work, explaining how we can protect our planet and the animals that live within it. A very productive week — well done, Year 5!
Year 6
Our Year 6 children have been working incredibly hard this week to make sure they are fully prepared for SATs week next week. They should be extremely proud of all the effort, determination, and resilience they have shown – it has been fantastic to see!
We would like to remind the children to think of next week as an opportunity to put their best foot forward and showcase everything they have learned. All of the teachers are already so proud of them – the most important thing now is simply to try their best and believe in themselves.
A letter has been sent home this week outlining the arrangements for SATs week. This includes an invitation for the children to attend our Breakfast Club from 8:30am, Monday to Thursday, which will help them start each day feeling settled and ready.
Booster sessions will continue to run after school on Monday and Tuesday next week as planned.
Finally, we encourage everyone to ensure they get plenty of rest over the weekend so they are feeling refreshed and ready for the week ahead.
Well done, Year 6 – we are all behind you! 🌟
