Message From Mrs Bury and Mrs Warnett
Over the last two weeks, we have held our first Curriculum Workshops of the academic year at St Wulstan's. Our sincere thanks to all staff for their commitment and dedication in ensuring that parents and carers are informed about the curriculum and how they can best support their children's learning at home.
Thank you to all parents and carers who were able to join us. We fully appreciate that work and family commitments can make it difficult to attend events during the school day, and we want to ensure that all families have access to the information and resources shared. With this in mind, we will be uploading the workshop presentations to our school website and sending home any supporting resources so that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the sessions.
We look forward to providing further opportunities throughout the year for parents and carers to find out more about their children's learning and how they can support them at home. Please keep an eye on our school calendar for details of upcoming workshops and events.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership .
On Friday 23rd October at 9:15am, we will gather as a school community to celebrate our Harvest Mass, giving thanks to God for His wonderful creation and the many blessings we receive. Harvest is a special time to reflect on all that we have been given and to remember those who may be experiencing hardship. It reminds us of the importance of gratitude, generosity and caring for others, putting our Gospel values into action.
As part of our Harvest celebrations, we are inviting children and families to donate food items, including tins, packets, cereals and other non-perishable goods. These donations will form part of our Harvest Sale, with all money raised going to CAFOD, supporting their important work with communities in need around the world. Any remaining food items will be donated to our local food bank, ensuring that our generosity also supports families closer to home.
We warmly welcome parents, carers, family members and friends to join us for this special Mass as we come together in prayer, thanksgiving and celebration.
To continue our day of community spirit and generosity, we will also be hosting a Macmillan Coffee Afternoon at 2:45pm on Friday 23rd October.
We warmly invite parents, carers, grandparents and friends to join us for refreshments and cake, while raising money for a very worthwhile cause. All money raised will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, helping them continue their invaluable work supporting people living with cancer and their families.
This promises to be a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school community and make a positive difference to the lives of others.
Thank you in advance for your continued kindness, generosity and support. At St Wulstan's, we are proud of the way our school family comes together to live out our faith through acts of love, compassion and service to others.
Weekly Round Up
Reception & Year 1
Reception and Year 1 have had another busy and exciting week! In History, the children have enjoyed learning more about the Gunpowder Plot, discovering how Guy Fawkes and the other plotters planned to dig a tunnel beneath Parliament and hide barrels of gunpowder. They are very excited to find out what happens next! In English, the children have been enjoying the story We're Going on a Bear Hunt and working hard on their sentence writing. In Art, they developed their observational drawing skills, taking time to look carefully at different fruits and creating some beautiful, detailed drawings. At Forest School, the children had great fun using palm drills to make their very own conker cars!
This week, the class has also been delighted to welcome back Miss Philpotts, a trainee teacher who worked with Reception during the Spring Term last year. She will be joining the class for the next few weeks, and the children have been very pleased to see her again!
Year 2 and 3
Year 2 and 3 have been enjoying writing the prologue of Beauty and the Beast this week. We have used the beautiful start of the 90's Disney film as visual literacy and used some of its rich language. The children have used vocabulary such as 'desired', 'monstrous', 'deceived', 'concealed' and 'bloomed', showing a developing understanding of their meaning. They wrote beautiful pieces of narrative and took great care in their sentence construction. We can't wait for you to read them at parents' evening next week! In maths, we have looked at number bonds to 10 and 100, including more challenging combinations such as 42+58=100. The children used their reasoning skills and number knowledge to spot patterns, make links and calculate more quickly. In science, the class have been reading non-fiction texts on habitats to do their own research. They then created fact files, showing the animals, plants, food sources and shelters that living things find in different places around the world. The children especially enjoyed learning about the polar regions and tried hard to remember where polar bears and penguins live. See if they can remember!
Year 4 and 5
The children have been continuing their hard work and efforts this week, developing their confidence and knowledge. In computing, the children have been learning how to compose and send emails to their friends using the '2email' programme on Purple Mash. In history, they have been learning about the origins of ancient Rome and how the story of Rome originated from the story of 'Romulus and Remus'. The children saw how the Roman empire grew over hundreds of years and how the Roman army was fundamental to their success. In writing, the children have been composing diary entries as the character 'Pik', who challenged a god to a traditional game of pok-a-tok to save his village from a drought. The children have enjoyed learning about a new game and how the pressures of performing can impact on emotions being shared through 'show and not tell' descriptions. In science, the children investigated the process of 'dissolving' and poured materials into liquids to see which ones were soluble and insoluble. Next week, the children have the challenge of cross-country trials in preparation for the annual competition which will be taking place in a few weeks time.
Year 6
It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 6! It has been lovely to welcome visitors into school this week to help train the children for their new leadership roles as Wellbeing Champions, Sports Crew members and Jumping Jaxx Leaders.
Our trainers, Mrs Repton and Mrs Goddard, were incredibly impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the children and praised their mature and sensible approach to their responsibilities. The children have already begun working on their first task, leading an assembly to introduce themselves and their roles to the rest of the school. Well done, Year 6!
Year 6 also celebrated their own Class Mass today. Thank you to all the children who read. You did a wonderful job and helped make the Mass a special occasion.
On Friday afternoon, a number of children took part in football trials ahead of upcoming fixtures. Next week, we will also be holding cross-country trials during one of our PE lessons in preparation for the local schools' event.
Spelling Shed Reminder: Spellings are now being set on Spelling Shed each week. All children should have their login details and are expected to practise their spellings regularly. New spellings will be set on Friday, and the spelling test will be available on Spelling Shed from Wednesday to Friday of the following week.
If your child is having any difficulties accessing Spelling Shed, please let Miss McGowan know and we will be happy to help. Thank you for your continued support. We hope you all have a lovely weekend!
