Message from Mrs Brocklesby

This week, our wonderful Year Six children approached their SATs with determination, resilience and a fantastic attitude. We are incredibly proud of every single pupil for the hard work, preparation and perseverance they have shown throughout the week. They tackled each challenge with confidence, supported one another brilliantly and represented our school with maturity and positivity. A huge thank you also goes to our dedicated staff and supportive families who helped encourage the children every step of the way.

Next week, our Year 3/4 and Year 5 pupils will be taking part in Bikeability training at school. The children will learn important cycling skills, including bike safety checks, road awareness and how to cycle safely and confidently.

We are looking forward to seeing the children develop their confidence, independence and understanding of road safety during the sessions.

KIND HEARTS AND A HUNGER FOR JUSTICE

Reception

This week, Reception have continued to work incredibly hard across all areas of their learning. In Phonics, the children have been focusing on recognising and reading tricky words, showing great determination and enthusiasm during their daily sessions. They have enjoyed practising these new words through games, reading activities and group work, and many children are becoming more confident readers each day. In Maths, the class have been developing their subitising skills, learning to recognise small groups of objects without needing to count them individually. The children have taken part in a range of practical and interactive activities to help strengthen their number recognition and early mathematical understanding. In English, the children have been exploring the traditional story of Little Red Riding Hood. They have enjoyed retelling the story, discussing the characters and sequencing key events. The class have also been using their imaginations to describe different parts of the story and talk about how the characters might be feeling. In Art, Reception recreated the famous painting The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. The children explored colour, texture and swirling patterns to create their own wonderful interpretations of the artwork, and they were very proud of their finished pieces. The children have also thoroughly enjoyed spending time junk modelling and engaging in role play this week. They showed fantastic creativity, teamwork and communication skills as they designed models, shared ideas and used their imaginations in the role play areas. In RE, the class have been learning about Pentecost and discussing why it is an important celebration for us. The children listened carefully to the story and enjoyed taking part in thoughtful discussions and activities linked to the topic.

KS1

Stourport Library is always one of our favourite places to visit! Year 1 and 2 had a lovely walk in the sunshine on Monday to choose some new books for home and for the classroom. The library know that the class are learning about explorers in history and prepared an exciting treasure hunt and other activities for the children to enjoy whilst there. They also helped us find some super non-fiction books to help with our history work. Thank you so much to the library staff for their expert knowledge and support. Thank you also to our amazing family helpers for joining us on the walk and supporting the children as they walked to and from the library. We really appreciate it. Year 1 and 2 have been enjoying art this week, using polystyrene to create stamp effects by carving tiles using a range of tools. They have then learnt stamping techniques to create their own maps. They had so much fun and can't wait to return to their creations next week to add more detail and texture. Several children made it to 'Gold' on the Zone Board this week and the class enjoyed some well-deserved 'Golden Time' to celebrate. The focus this time was on wonderful writing and it was so hard to choose the golden children as so many of the class have impressed us this half term with their efforts and high-quality pieces. Well done, everyone!

Forest School: Year 1 and Year 2 children were introduced to tools and how using them can help create sustainable items. The children worked in pairs to use a bow saw to cut discs for their personalised ‘Forest School medals’. They then hammered the letters of their names into the discs and were asked to decorate them, linking their designs to Forest School. The children also used hand trowels and forks to dig and play around in the mud kitchens, along with playing some of the games shared from previous weeks with themselves leading. Next week, Mr Tasker will be introducing the children to the fire pit where he will be teaching the children about fire safety and how to cook over the fire.

Year 3 and 4

This week, the children have maintained their hard work and effort, which has been impressive as we get closer to the end of a busy half term. In maths, the children have been looking at decimals and recognising 'tenths'. They have been able to convert tenths into fractions and decimals, recognise them on a number line and using place value charts. In science, the children have been developing their understanding and classification keys by researching plants and trees and using their characteristics to answer 'yes' or 'no' questions. The children have really enjoyed making shadow art in their art less this week and have worked together to design letters and display their work. The theme was to use words that they would associate with our class and the school. Next week, the children are looking forward to completing their Level 1 Bikeability and are excited to share their bikes with their friends.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been busy exploring a range of exciting new learning opportunities. In maths, the children began their new unit on area and perimeter, focusing on finding the perimeter of rectangles and more complex rectilinear shapes. They have worked exceptionally hard to master these new skills, showing great perseverance and accuracy. In English, Year 5 started reading A Tadpole’s Promise and have been writing setting descriptions using rich figurative language, including metaphors, personification, and onomatopoeia. Their star writes have been a joy to read, and Miss Homsin has been extremely impressed with their creativity and effort.
In art, the class continued their architecture project, designing thoughtful monuments dedicated to Sir David Attenborough. They discussed their design brief, the purpose of their creations, and considered which materials would best suit their ideas. Meanwhile, in music with Mrs Mallinson, the children have been engaging enthusiastically with a new program, practising on the xylophones and developing their instrumental skills. A special thank you to all those who brought in cakes for Year 5’s cake sale this week! The children had a wonderful time organising and selling the cakes! Thank you to the PTA for organising this event and thank you to the Year 5 who got stuck in and helped sell the cakes. Well done for a fabulous week Year 5.

Year 6

This week, all of the staff could not be more proud of our Year 6 pupils, who have worked incredibly hard to complete their SATs. The children have shown fantastic resilience and perseverance throughout the week—well done to each and every one of you! Miss McGowan would like to say a HUGE well done and thank you to all of you and to your grown ups for their continued support.

A number of Year 6 children also led our Mass today. They represented the school beautifully, and we would like to say a huge thank you for being such wonderful role models.

The children then celebrated this afternoon with a party lunch. Thank you so much for all of the kind donations—Year 6 certainly have enough treats to keep them going until the end of the year!

To round off the day, the children spent the afternoon completing some very important “research” by watching Madagascar, as this is their chosen play for this year—very exciting! Auditions will be held during school time next week, and roles will be cast and scripts shared by the end of the week so that children can begin learning their lines.

After such a busy week, we still have many exciting things ahead! Have a well-deserved rest this weekend, Year 6, and come back ready to shine again next week. ⭐
