Celebrating Birthdays While Prioritising Attendance

At St Wulstan's, we know that birthdays are very special occasions and an important time for children and families to celebrate together. However, regular school attendance is vital to children's learning, progress, wellbeing and friendships. Every day in school matters, and even occasional absences can mean children miss valuable learning experiences and important moments with their classmates.

Having reviewed our attendance data, we have noticed that a number of children have been absent from school on their birthdays. These absences are recorded as unauthorised absences and can have an impact on a child's overall attendance percentage.

We have decided to introduce a new way to celebrate birthdays at school while ensuring children do not miss a day of learning.

Birthday Mufti Day
From Monday 19 October 2026:
  • If it is your birthday on a school day, you may come to school in your own clothes (mufti) instead of wearing school uniform.
  • If your birthday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, you may wear your own clothes on the Friday before.
  • If your birthday falls during a school holiday, you may wear your own clothes on the Friday before the holiday begins.
  • If the chosen day is already a whole-school Mufti Day, you may wear your own clothes on the Thursday instead.
As a special introduction to this new initiative, any child whose birthday has already taken place between 1 September and 23 October 2026 may come to school in their own clothes on Friday 23 October.

We hope this new tradition will help make birthdays even more special while reinforcing the importance of excellent attendance. Thank you for your continued support in ensuring every child attends school regularly and makes the most of every learning opportunity.

Weekly Round Up

Reception and Year 1

This week, the children have been enjoying the story Katie in London in English, which has linked beautifully with their Geography learning about the capital cities of the United Kingdom. In Design and Technology, the children began their exciting new projects by exploring sliders and movement. They successfully created rabbits that popped out of hats and cars that moved along roads! In Maths, Year 1 have been developing their understanding of addition and are beginning to solve addition problems, whilst Reception have been exploring numbers to 5. All the children have also been working hard to improve their number formation. In Science, the children concluded their materials unit with an exciting investigation day! They enjoyed predicting and testing which objects would float or sink, discovering which materials were magnetic and investigating the best way to melt ice. Finally, the children made the most of the lovely sunshine during Forest School, where they developed their gross motor skills, strength and teamwork by pulling tyres up a hill!

Year 2 and 3

We were feeling electric in Year 2 and 3 this week! In DT, the class created light up history posters, using cardboard backed with an electrical circuit. The children loved making them and are so proud of their efforts. We have promised to let them keep them on display in the classroom for as long as we can! Some of the children in Year 3 made us really proud of the CTA Tag Rugby Festival this Friday, working brilliantly as a team and showing such enjoyment and excitement! They had great energy as they came back to school and then straight back out for their swimming lessons. What a day! In maths, the Year 2 children enjoyed doing 'jumps' on the hundred square rug to help them add on the nearest ten, developing their understanding of number bonds to 10 and how these help us add larger numbers. This week was School Council voting and the children thought carefully about their British Values as they discussed the importance of democracy and why we vote rather than have the teachers choose. We were so impressed by their speeches and how clearly they read and spoke aloud to the rest of the class. We are glad we weren't in charge of choosing the Councillors as everyone did so well. In science, the class have continued to learn about habitats, thinking about the terms 'depend' and 'co-depend' as we discussed what a polar bear depends on for survival. Some children began to understand the importance of being 'top of the food chain' and were relieved to hear that humans are also top of the food chain! Phew!

Year 4 and 5

This week, the children continued to develop their understanding of British history by analysing the invasions of Julius Caesar and Emperor Claudius. The children learnt why our islands were appealing to the Romans and also learnt some facts about the success and failures of invasion attempts. In maths the children have been putting their excellent times tables knowledge to the test to find factors and complete calculations using different representations. The children have been researching the physical features of Mesoamerica and how these features were important to the successes of ancient and current cities in this region. On Wednesday, Mr Tasker and Miss McGowan were so impressed with the children's resilience and determination on competing in the cross country trials on the school field. The children were tasked with completing five laps of the school field and the support and effort put in by the children was amazing. A team of boys and girls will now represent the school at the Cross Country Competition at The Memorial Park after half term and wish them all the best. Finally, Mr Tasker was really impressed with the children who put themselves forward as candidates for the School Council. They spoke confidently and with clarity, selecting key skills and characteristics that they see in themselves and using them to persuade the voters. Well done, everyone!

Year 6

It’s been another busy week in Year 6, with the children continuing to work incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum. They have shown great enthusiasm, determination and a positive attitude towards their learning. Well done, Year 6! This week, the children took part in cross country trials, demonstrating fantastic resilience, perseverance and commitment. They challenged themselves, showed determination and gave their best efforts throughout. We are incredibly proud of their positive attitudes and the way they approached the challenge. In science, the children investigated light and prisms as they explored what happens to light. They developed their scientific understanding through practical investigation and considered how light behaves when it passes through a prism. In history, the children continued their learning about the Industrial Revolution. They explored the impact of the invention of the steam engine, considering how it changed factories and the lives and working conditions of the people employed in them. The children are developing a deeper understanding of how this significant invention transformed industry. In maths, the children have been working hard on formal methods for division and long multiplication. They have been developing their confidence and accuracy when applying these methods to a range of calculations. Regular practice will help to strengthen these essential mathematical skills.

A number of children put themselves forward to become school council representatives this week. The speeches they delivered were excellent, and the children spoke with confidence, maturity and enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see them sharing their ideas and showing a willingness to take on responsibility within our school community. Absolutely brilliant work, Year 6!

The children should have brought home past SATs papers this week. These papers were completed at the start of the school year and can now be used for additional practice at home to support and reinforce their learning. They provide a useful opportunity to revisit previous questions, identify areas for development and build confidence ahead of the SATs assessments.

Please also remember that children should be logging on to Spelling Shed to practise the spellings in preparation for their weekly spelling tests. In addition, regular use of Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)is encouraged to help improve multiplication and division fluency and support their learning in class.

Thank you for your continued support at home. The children have had another productive week, and we are very proud of the hard work, resilience and enthusiasm they continue to show. Keep it up, Year 6!
