Reception and Year 1 have had another fantastic and very busy week! In Maths, Year 1 have been developing their understanding of place value, while Reception have been working hard on subitising and exploring the composition of numbers to 3.

In English, Reception have been developing their pre-handwriting skills, while Year 1 have been focusing on careful letter formation. In Science, the children have continued their learning about objects and the different materials they are made from. In Art, they have enjoyed exploring the different types of lines they can create, and in Geography they have been learning that the United Kingdom is made up of four countries.

In RE, the children have been learning about Creation and reflecting on all the wonderful things that God has made. They have also had lots of fun taking part in PE, Computing and Forest School this week. A particular highlight was the Rock Band assembly, which the children thoroughly enjoyed!

Another wonderful week of learning, exploring and having fun together in Reception and Year 1!

Year 2 and 3

The class have particularly impressed us this week with their beautiful Star Writes, retelling 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura. The book is fictional but is great for showing what life was like in the Stone Age, which links perfectly with their current history work. The children worked so hard to use the key vocabulary for the week, worked on including expanded noun phrases and wrote absolutely beautifully. The class have had a big push on starting to join their letters this half term and their hard work is certainly paying off. It was lovely to see how proud the children were of their writing. One child even said, 'Time to shine!' as he started writing his story! They really did shine and we can't wait for you to see their books at parents' evening next month! In maths, the class have been counting in 2s, 3s, 5s, 10s, 100s and 50s! Wow! In science, the class are learning about living things and have been comparing living things with things that have never been alive. The class leant about 'Mrs Gren' to remember the seven life processes. Test the adults at home to see if they can still remember this from when they were at school! We have been delighted to welcome Miss Abbott, a PGCE teaching student, this week. We look forward to her working with us this term. There is a letter in your child's bag this evening regarding the Churchfields Scarecrow Festival that is on next weekend. Please return the slip attached to the letter as soon as possible as it is to distribute the free tickets to Churchfields. 

Year 4/5

The children have had another enjoyable week in school, starting with their first Forest School session on Tuesday. The children had the opportunity to play games, role-play and create craft items using nails, hammers, mallets, wood and anything natural from the forest. It was refreshing to see how much the children engage with their natural environment and grow in confidence during each session. In science, the children planned and carried out an investigation looking at thermal insulators and conductors. They needed to using data loggers to record the temperature of water over a 15 minute period and then used their data to create graphs to show what happened to the water temperature over 3 minute intervals. In computing, the children developed their understanding of using email to communicate to others. They learnt how to open an email and respond to an email using 2email on the Purple Mash programme. The children also showed their French speaking and listening skills by learning new sounds and applying these to words and sentences to find the missing sounds. This week's focus was on the 'i', 'in', 'ique' and 'ille' sounds and the children had great fun saying and repeating these in words and phrases. Magnifique!

Year 6 

This week, Year 6 have worked incredibly hard across the curriculum.

In maths, the children have continued their work on place value, deepening their understanding of numbers up to 10,000,000. In science, they have been thinking carefully about how light travels and comparing this with sound. In RE, they have continued their work on stewardship and reflected on how they know they are not perfect, but must work hard to make good choices and look after God’s creation. In English, the children have continued developing their narrative retelling of the amazing story The Crow’s Tale, and next week they will complete their star write for this piece. As historians, the children have also begun to explore the changes that occurred during the Industrial Revolution.

 Today was also a very special celebration, as Year 6 found out who will be this year’s House Captains and Sports Captains. All of the children who took part wrote fantastic speeches and spoke with confidence and clarity, which was very impressive. Miss McGowan was so pleased to see how all the children celebrated each other’s successes – a really mature attitude – well done to all of our Year 6 children.

Over the next few weeks, Year 6 will also be taking part in Wellbeing Champion, Sports Crew and Play Leader training for their upcoming roles. More to follow on that soon!
