Message from Mrs Brocklesby

This week, Mrs Warnett, Mrs Laskey (Head of School at Saint Wulstan’s), and Mr Garriff, a Governor, conducted a learning walk focused on Catholic Life across the school.

They made a number of fantastic observations, including the strong sense of community, the respectful and reflective behaviour of pupils, and the way faith is clearly embedded in daily school life. It was wonderful to see pupils confidently discussing their beliefs and values, and demonstrating a genuine understanding of our Catholic ethos.

We are very proud of how our children live out our mission each day.

KIND HEARTS AND A HUNGER FOR JUSTICE

Autism Awareness Day

Our school community came together to mark Autism Awareness Day in a meaningful and joyful way. Children and staff showed their support by wearing blue, creating a strong sense of unity and understanding throughout the day.

Autism Awareness Day helps to raise understanding, promote inclusion, and celebrate the diversity that makes our community such a special place.

Reception

Reception have had another busy and engaging week. On Tuesday, the children enjoyed a visit from an author, where they had the opportunity to ask lots of thoughtful questions and learn about how they too could become authors one day. During Forest School, the children explored creating patterns using natural materials. In maths, they have been learning about number bonds to 5, building confidence in their understanding of early number relationships. In English, Reception have been using the book Oi Dog! to inspire their writing, thinking creatively about different animals and where they should sit. In RE, the children have continued their learning about Easter, focusing this week on the Paschal candle and its significance. In Geography, they have been learning about the United Kingdom and the different countries that make it up, developing their awareness of the wider world.

KS1

The children in Year 1 and 2 have been enjoying learning about vegetables this week! Reading 'Oliver's Vegetables', the class have been writing letters as Oliver. We have discussed the different vegetables, especially the ones with which we were less familiar. We had the opportunity to try beetroot, finding out that it can be used to make a lipstick too! It was lovely to see some of the children try beetroot for the first time. Well done! In science, the children have started observing the weather changing to beautiful spring weather. They noticed features of spring and how the world around us changes. In computing, the children have been adding clipart images to spreadsheets and giving them values. In maths, the children have continued to work on money and have applied their knowledge of larger numbers to start adding more coins and notes together. The children especially enjoyed the author visit from B Ware on Tuesday and were inspired to write some fantastic creative pieces of writing. We loved reading them and B was so impressed that such young children had such great ideas! Some people's grandparents have turned out to be secret supervillians! The highlight of the week, of course, was starting forest school. Mr Tasker and Mrs Johnson were really pleased at the great start the class made, listening carefully to safety instructions and showing great enthusiasm to learn as much as they could. They can't wait for next week!

Year 3 / Year 4

This week, the children have made the most of the sunny weather by having the opportunity to take part in some lessons outside. In PE, the children worked on developing their batting and bowling skills to hit targets and get the ball to go in the direction we would like. Being up on the school field allowed the children to develop their awareness of power by adjusting their throwing techniques dependent on the distance between them and the targets. In art, the children worked on the playground to create 'big art' using chalk and techniques used by the African ceramic artist, Magdalene Odundo. They used soft, curvy 2D shapes and joined them to make 3D shapes on large pieces of sugar paper.  The children have been applying their times table knowledge in maths to answer questions about fractions. They have combined this knowledge with adding and subtraction to complete problems with improper fractions and mixed numbers. The children started their new history unit this week which is all about ancient Greece. They were able to share their understanding of land being shared between city-states and ordered some key events on a timeline to develop their chronology skills. In English, the children retold the Greek myth of 'Theseus and the Minotaur' using interested verbs, fronted adverbials and short sentences to create excitement and change the speed of the story. They have shared some lovely ideas and are improving on the accuracy of punctuation in their work. We have also had a lovely time welcoming our author visitor B Ware on Tuesday, creating some very detailed short stories and enjoyed supporting Autism Awareness Day by wearing blue, developing a better understanding of people within our community.

Year 5

Year 5 have had another busy week! On Tuesday they welcomed author B. Ware, who talked about her brand-new book — the children enjoyed writing and drawing activities inspired by her visit, showcasing their entertaining stories and fantastic creativity. In class, Year 5 completed impressive non-chronological reports on Earth and space, becoming real experts on the solar system. In maths they have worked hard on decimals, exploring tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Well done Year 5!
In art, Year 5 started their unit on Architecture. Focusing on the work of Zahar Hadid, the children have been studying form and shape, look at the different perspectives of buildings. The children worked hard at designing their own futuristic environmentally friendly homes!

Year 6

It’s been another fantastic week in school for Year 6: full of energy, effort, and enthusiasm! The children have been doing great preparation for SATs. Everyone is working incredibly hard, and it really shows. Keep it up! As we continue this important period, please remember how vital it is for children to get plenty of rest, enjoy a good night’s sleep, and make sure they are eating and drinking well each day.
In PE, we’ve been having lots of fun developing our skills in tennis and cricket. It’s been wonderful to see such teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship on display. Music this week was tricky this week as the children were investigating graphic scores. The children were challenged to match the graphic score to the what they could hear! Mrs Mallinson was very impressed with how the children approached this challenge.  In RE, we are continuing our journey towards Confirmation by learning about the first followers of Jesus and reflecting on what we can learn from their faith and actions. We were also very lucky to have a visit from the author B. Ware, who inspired the children to create some truly amazing (and slightly terrifying) free writing—what a creative and exciting experience!
Finally, a big well done and thank you to all the pupils who led today’s Mass so beautifully. You showed great confidence, respect, and reverence, and made us all very proud. Thank you for another brilliant week. Keep shining!
