PILGRIMS OF HOPE
It has been wonderful to welcome everyone back to school this week as we begin our Lenten journey, a special season of reflection, prayer, and preparation leading up to Easter. This week, all the children have written a Lenten prayer, which has been added to create a school prayer chain. Saint Wulstan’s and Saint Ambrose School will be swapping prayer chains, with a prayer from each chain being read every day, helping us all reflect and grow together during this meaningful season. Lent is a time to focus on kindness, generosity, and spiritual growth, and through activities like our prayer chain, we encourage everyone to take a moment each day to pause, pray, and consider how they can make a positive difference in their school, home, and community. I also look forward to seeing Year 3 parents, who are preparing their son or daughter for their First Holy Communion, at the Reconciliation Meeting at Church on Wednesday at 6 o'clock.

Father Hudson’s Caritas Fundraising – Christ-centred Pilgrims of Hope, Hunger for Justice
It’s that time of year again when we come together to support the ‘Pledge £1 for Father Hudson’s Caritas’ campaign! Last year, our combined efforts raised over £130,000, making a tremendous impact across Father Hudson Caritas projects. This year, the Birmingham Diocese Education Service  is aiming even higher, and invites all Diocesan schools to join in. During Lent, our Ambassadors will be organising fundraising activities to support the £1 Pledge initiative. We encourage everyone to take part by donating £1 (or more!) and participating in the exciting events planned throughout the season. Together, small sacrifices can make a big difference. More details about specific fundraising opportunities will be shared soon by our Ambassadors, so stay tuned and get ready to help make this year even more successful!

KIND HEARTS AND A HUNGER FOR JUSTICE

Following the recent meeting regarding transport to Hagley, Councillor Perks contacted Worcestershire County Council to explore the possibility of arranging transport support. We have now received a response from Stuart Payton, Head of Transport Operations.

The Council has confirmed that they are able to provide a list of approved transport suppliers. If we can give an approximate number of pupils who may require transport, they can narrow this list to operators with suitably sized vehicles.

To move this forward, we would like to establish a small working party group. The first task of this group will be to gather information on which families would be interested in using a school-organised transport service, and how many children in each family would potentially require a place. This will allow us to assess demand and explore suitable options.

If you are willing to join the working party and can meet either in person or via Teams next week, please email ebrocklesby@emmausmac.com.

Thank you for your support as we work together on this.

FORMING CHRIST CENTERED PILGRIMS OF HOPE

PTA Meeting – 5th March at 6:00pm

We would like to invite you to attend our upcoming PTA meeting on Thursday 5th March at 6:00pm in person or via Teams.

At this meeting, we will be formally appointing the key PTA roles of Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. These roles are essential in helping the PTA operate effectively and continue supporting our school community.

Please remember that all parents, carers and staff are automatically members of the PTA, and we warmly encourage as many of you as possible to attend. Your involvement, ideas and support make a real difference to the experiences we can provide for our children.

We hope you are able to join us and look forward to seeing you there.

Reception

Reception have had a fantastic first week back after half term and have enjoyed lots of exciting learning opportunities. In Music, the children explored tempo and pace through dance, moving fast and slow to match the music. In RE, they learned about Lent and discussed ways they can spread kindness to others. The class created a special prayer chain to send to another school and were delighted to receive one in return so they can pray for each other.

In Maths, the children have been exploring length through practical activities, and in Science they have been learning about the life cycle of a frog. Their focus text this week was The Gingerbread Man, which supported their learning across the curriculum. In Geography, they created maps to help the Gingerbread Man escape, and during Forest School they designed and built bridges to help him cross the river safely. It has been a busy and wonderful start to the new half term!

KS1

Year 1 and 2 have settled back into school life and have showed great enthusiasm this week! In maths, the children have been enjoying using equipment to learn about division practically, sorting into groups and sharing. Some children have even started using times table facts to help them calculate division. In English, the children have been using their science learning to write beautiful explanation texts, explaining the life cycle of a butterfly. Some children in the class are real experts on this subject and impressed us with fascinating butterfly facts! In RE, the children have started learning about Lent and enjoyed being challenged to do a 'secret good deed' this Lent. We talked about how we like to be praised for being good (even grown ups!) and how much harder it is to do a good deed in secret. The children have been sneaking around doing kind deeds this week whilst trying not to be spotted doing them! In computing, the children learnt about bugs in computer programs and how to 'debug' a program. The children were very thorough when debugging, remembering to test their programs to see if they had successfully fixed any problems. The children are becoming increasingly independent logging on and using the computers themselves. Their growing reading skills are invaluable for this as they can read what is on the screen to help them access the software without adult help. This is so lovely to see-well done everyone on your super reading and computer skills!

Year 3 and Year 4

The children have had a great start back after the half term break. In maths, the children have been applying their multiplication, adding and subtraction skills to find the perimeters of rectilinear shapes and polygons. In design and technology, the children began some market research for biscuits and looked at the biscuit design, packaging and considered what might be the target audience for each biscuit. Over the coming weeks, the children will be adapting a basic short bread biscuit recipe using some of the findings from their research. The children shared some really reflective thoughts and ideas during our lesson on the virtues and values 'Intentional and Prophetic'. They used a piece of artwork of Jesus in the desert to share the significance of the responsibility Jesus had and shared ideas of how they can be intentional in their actions inspired by Gospel values. The children researched significant buildings from different ancient civilisations in their final history lesson and compared the materials and designs to buildings found in Britain at the same time. Finally, the children impressed in their French lesson today with Mrs Morgan. The children really enjoy recalling the key words and phrases of each unit and are growing in confidence to say the words orally but also spell them out. Well done!

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have continued to show what it means to be thoughtful, determined and reflective learners. They have been especially intentional in their efforts, taking care with their work and showing a growing understanding of how their actions and attitudes shape their learning journey. They have also explored what it means to be prophetic – speaking thoughtfully, making wise choices and using their voices to encourage and guide others in a positive way.

In Science, Year 5 have been modelling like real scientists. They have been thinking carefully about the planets in our solar system, exploring the significant size differences between each one. They were amazed to discover just how large Jupiter is compared to Earth, and how small some of the other planets are in comparison. The class also investigated how we know that the Earth is spherical. By examining scientific evidence, such as photographs from space, the way ships disappear over the horizon and the way shadows change, they began to understand how scientific ideas are supported by observation and evidence. Year 5 approached this learning with curiosity and thoughtful questioning.

In English, the focus has been on sentence structure. Year 5 have been working hard to develop a range of sentence types, ensuring their writing is clear, engaging and well-organised. They have been intentional in improving their vocabulary and checking their punctuation, showing pride in presenting their very best work.

In Maths, the children have been concentrating on efficient division strategies. They have explored different methods and considered which approaches are most effective for different calculations. It has been wonderful to see them explaining their reasoning clearly and supporting one another when problems become challenging.

On Tuesday, Year 5 enjoyed Forest School with Mr Tasker. They embraced the outdoor environment with enthusiasm, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and respect for nature. They showed responsibility and cooperation, living out the school’s values beyond the classroom walls.

In PE with Miss Gillum, the class explored leadership skills and what it means to support teammates. They learned how to adapt games to ensure everyone can participate successfully. Year 5 showed encouragement, communication and flexibility, understanding that true leadership involves kindness, listening and teamwork.

Overall, Year 5 should feel proud of their commitment to learning and to living out their virtues and values each day. Their intentional focus and growing confidence in being prophetic voices within the classroom are helping them to flourish both academically and personally.

Year 6

Year 6 have had a great first week back after half term — and what a busy one it has been!
In Maths, the children have been exploring decimals and place value. They have been rounding decimals, as well as adding and subtracting them, showing increasing confidence and resilience when tackling challenges. It has been fantastic to see them explaining their reasoning so clearly. In English, the children were inspired by the beautiful animation, The Piano. Using the film as a stimulus, they wrote their own poems with a focus on emotive and figurative language. The children had such amazing ideas and really threw themselves into the challenge of poetry. They took risks by experimenting with ambitious vocabulary, powerful imagery and creative techniques - all with wonderful results. Miss McGowan is incredibly proud of their effort and bravery in trying something new. Well done, Year 6! In PE, the children have started their new Yoga unit. They learnt a range of yoga poses and discussed the positive effects yoga can have on both physical and mental health. It has been lovely to see them begin to develop balance, focus and mindfulness during these sessions. In Geography, the children are building on their historical knowledge of World War II by exploring the geographical impact the war had. This week, they used maps to identify the locations of some of the Allied Forces and Axis Powers, considering how geographical location may have influenced the alliances that were formed. They approached this complex learning thoughtfully and maturely. Next week, Year 6 are very much looking forward to World Book Day — always a fabulous and fun event. Miss McGowan would like to ask the children to think carefully about a book that they love and then invite them to bring the book in next week. This could be a childhood favourite or a recent read that has captured their interest. The children will then have the opportunity to share their chosen book with the rest of the class.

We have a stock of pre-loved school uniform, kept at the back of the hall.  If you wish to access this, please do so at the end of the school day.   We are rather short of red polo shirts (aged 8 years and upwards) and red PE shorts (aged 8 years and upwards).  If you have any of these you no longer need, we would appreciate your donations.  We don't need donations of any other uniform at the moment, thank you.
