Curriculum Overview

CURRICULUM INTENT

At St Wulstan’s, we believe in providing a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum in which every subject is valued. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, capture children’s imaginations and nurture a lifelong love of learning.

We provide a stimulating and inclusive environment where all children can learn, discover and investigate across a wide range of subjects. Through carefully planned learning experiences, pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to become independent, imaginative and resilient problem-solvers. We are committed to ensuring that every child can access a challenging and exciting curriculum, regardless of their background, ability or individual needs.

Some of our classes are taught in mixed-age groups, which may change from year to year depending on cohort sizes. To ensure that every child receives their full curriculum entitlement, our staff have worked closely with curriculum specialists and undertaken focused training. Each subject has been carefully mapped through curriculum “road maps”, which set out the essential knowledge and skills pupils will learn. These road maps ensure that content is taught in a clear sequence, revisited at appropriate points and securely remembered and that every pupil covers the same key content by the end of Year 6.

Ofsted recognised this strength in our curriculum planning:

“Leaders have given careful consideration to how all pupils can access the core knowledge in each subject. As pupils are in mixed-age classes, which can change each year due to variable cohort sizes, they have produced ‘road maps’. These ensure that by the end of Year 6, all pupils have covered the same key content across the curriculum.”

Learning at St Wulstan’s extends beyond the classroom. We give children opportunities to discover, investigate and experience learning in many different ways, including educational visits, workshops and talks from visiting experts, and specialist curriculum days focused on particular subjects. These rich experiences help bring learning to life, encourage children to explore further and build the resilience and perseverance they need to succeed.
