Today we explored micro-habitats in our local environment. The children took care not to disturb the wildlife too much
As part of our computing work, this half term Year 2 are using spreadsheets to present data in a variety of ways. The children are collecting data and then using their skills to present this data in a variety of way. They are then able to use their spreadsheets to help them solve mathematical puzzles.
On the 2nd of March, we celebrated World Book Day! In Year 2 our focus text was The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch. The children all dressed up as characters from this book. We started the day with a whole school assembly where we showed off our costumes to the rest of the school then spent the rest of the day celebrating reading. What a wonderful day we had.
On Wednesday 1st March we held a whole school Wellbeing Day. Children's wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. The day consisted of a carousel of activities to promote positivity and wellbeing.
To launch our current topic Amazing Animals we had our very own Animal encounter in school. The children got to meet, hold and pet a variety of animals and learnt lots of interesting facts about them.
For our Design Technology project, Year 2 had to design, create and evaluate a castle. There was specific criteria that they had to include within their project such as a working drawbridge. For the create section of our project, we were joined with our Faith Friends from Year 5 who were able to support and encourage us.
We had a lovely day in school celebrating St Wulstans Feast Day. We gathered as a school to share information on the life of Saint Wulstans. We then used some Cadburys Hero’s to help guide us in prayer, before writing our own prayers to Saint Wulstan. In the afternoon we completed a class project where each child created a part of art, which was then put together to create a stained glass window to remind of all the work that Saint Wulstan did through his life.
This half term we have been working on our gymnastic skills. The children have been building on their knowledge of spins and rolls and combining these to create short sequences.
This week the children have been leaning all about castles. We started with finding out who built the first castles in Britain. We have found all abut the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and looked at the Bayeux Tapestry. We have looked at how castles were attacked and the advantages and disadvantages of building them near to certain physical features.
Year 2 had a lovely morning litter picking. They learnt all about how plastics are not biodegradable and even found some rubbish that had a best before date of 2009! Thankfully this has now been collected and will no longer pose a risk to animal or the environment
This week in maths we have been learning how to exchange, to support us in adding and subtracting when crossing tens. The children now understand that ten ones can be exchanged for one ten and use this to help them calculate their answers.
Year 2 joined with our Faith Friends from Year 5 on Monday for a PE session in the sunshine. Year 5 taught Year 2 a variety of games. Through this the children got to learn and grow together. The children developed a range of skills, not only in PE but also in leadership and teamwork. It was so lovely to watch the Year 5 work with the younger children and to ensure that fun and learning was achieved by all.
On Tuesday 4th October we spent the day learning how to be planet heroes. We participated in an interactive theatre performance and learnt all about how we can makes changes to ensure that we are looking after God's planet. We made birds by reusing and repurposing toilet roll tubes. A wonderful day was had by all.
This Summer term, we will be getting outside to enjoy becoming gardeners! We started our topic with a nature walk around school to see how our bulbs we had planted had grown in the Spring. There were bluebells, pansies and daffodils everywhere in vibrant splashes of colour under the canopy of trees and nestled in the grasses. We will be creating models of different parts of a tree and flowers and have learnt what plants need to grow and stay healthy in our Easter Gardens. We will also creat some wonderful natural art, including beautiful blossom crowns! We collected lots of natural resources to take back to school. We will be using them as part of our learning on the natural artist, Andy Goldsworthy. Back in school, we will grow a range of flowers as part of our science and art work. In geography, we will learn about plants around the world and how they are suited to different habitats.
Information
Once upon a time, there lived a lady called Beatrix Potter…
Step into Beatrix Potter’s enchanting world of British animals and their adventures. Be naughty and squeeeeze under Mr McGregor’s gate to discover why little rabbits should always listen to their mothers! Sail across a lake with some squirrels to see what happens when you tease a wise old owl. Giggle with Mittens, Moppet and Tom Kitten as they make themselves unfit to be seen playing outside.
After enjoying Beatrix Potter’s beautiful tales, find out more about the life of the famous author and illustrator. Compare Beatrix’s life as a wealthy Victorian child with a normal Victorian child’s day. Discover the real life of the British animals and habitats in her stories. Develop your own artistic talents by learning the art techniques that Beatrix would have learnt as a child. We look forward to showcasing our knowledge by sharing our own stories with you!

See the castle ahead? Get ready to invade its mighty walls! Shoot a projectile with an archer’s aim! Head across the drawbridge, over the moat and up to the top of the tower. Meet Rapunzel who lives in a tall, tall tower. Let’s build a brand new one. Whose is the tallest? Can you measure it? Then dig deep, deep down, making burrows and tunnels, just like the animals who live underground. What’s that sound? I hear little hooves going trip, trap, trip, trap, over the rickety bridge. Watch out for the angry troll underneath. He likes to gobble up little girls and boys! Make sure your bridge is sturdy enough to take our weight and get us safely to the other side. And finally, meet three little pigs who need your help to build a strong fortress. Inside its strong walls they’ll be safe from the big, bad wolf! No huffing and puffing will blow your fortress down.

Blackberry Picking Walk
We started our wonderful topic by going on an autumnal walk down to the river to gather blackberries (just like Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail!). With the help of our teachers, we gathered enough to bake four ENORMOUS blackberry and apple crumbles! They were delicious! See below a photo of some star bakers!

This term, we will be getting outside to enjoy becoming gardeners! We started our topic with a wonderful trip to Westonbirt Arboretum to learn how plants and trees grow and thrive. We created models of different parts of a tree and learnt what plants need to grow and stay healthy. We also created some wonderful natural art, including beautiful blossom crowns! This term, we will be exploring and enjoying a wide range of fairy tales. We will be learning the common features of fairy tales and writing our own versions. We will then explore some exciting alternative versions…some in which not everyone will live happily ever after!
Linked to our topic will be some exciting ‘Three Little Pigs’ science and D&T work. Hopefully, we will be able to experience some outdoor learning linked to this when the weather improves.
Year 2 were very lucky to see a weasel sneaking around the playground during a PE lesson. Was it one of Beatrix Potter's characters, lost? We have researched weasels and found out some fascinating facts! We trialled different locations for weasel habitats by putting out cat food. We then designed and built weasel dens at Forest School for our weasel friend to live in during the winter months. We hope that the weasel will come back to visit us and say, 'Thank you!"
