Message from Mrs Brocklesby

This week in school we have remembered , Pope Francis’ legacy as one that brought the Church closer to its mission of love, mercy and justice.

Pope Francis was a passionate advocate of children and young people, calling them the ‘joy and hope of the Church and the world!’.

Pope Francis said that his own life story was a journey of hope. He understood that in a world that can feel scary or divided, God’s love and the hope it brings is needed more than ever. In fact, he made hope the theme of this Jubilee Year. Pope Francis has inspired us all to work for a better world.

In this Jubilee Year at Saint Wulstan's we are responding with great enthusiasm to Pope Francis’ call to be Pilgrims of Hope.

Reception and Year 1

Reception and Year 1 have settled into the summer term beautifully and have been making the most of the lovely weather by taking their learning outdoors. In PE, the children have been developing their throwing skills, focusing on aiming with accuracy. During RE lessons, they reflected on how the women might have felt when they discovered the empty tomb. In History, the children continued their work on fairness, learning about the inspiring story of Claudia Jones and her efforts to promote equality in Britain. They also began an exciting new art topic, exploring primary and secondary colours through fun and creative activities.

Year 2 and 3

Year 2 and 3 have made a great start to the term and have started off by enjoying being led in a PE session by aspiring sports leaders in Year 5. They listened carefully to the Year 5s and enjoyed looking up to them as super role models. Thank you so much, Year 5! In DT, the children have started a new unit on textiles. They thoroughly enjoyed practising their running stitch skills and threading needles. The children showed great perseverance even when they found it tricky. They are looking forward to carrying on their sewing next week! In history, the children have started a new topic on Egypt in history. They were fascinated by the facts they learnt about the River Nile and how important it was and is to life.

Year 4

It's been a really positive start to the Summer Term this week, with the children enjoying the good weather and learning. In maths, the children finished their unit on fractions. They have really pleased with their efforts of converting from mixed numbers to improper fractions and have really benefitted from the hard work they have put in to learning their times tables. In PE, the children started their unit on tennis. They recalled some of the previous skills confidently and began looking at how to move in games and activities to send and receive a ball before returning to the centre of their side of the court. The children have enjoyed reading their new class text for this half term with lots of questions and knowledge shared about the life of animals and roles of humans in 'Charlotte's Web'. They are really looking forward to seeing how these characters develop over the next few chapters. In computing, the children started to look at programming and using micro:bits. Again, they are looking forward to understanding some of the key features over the coming weeks and creating more complex sets of instructions. Well done!

Year 5

It has been such a lovely start to the summer term and Year 5 have really jumped into their learning which has been wonderful to see. They started the week by applying their leadership skills from their PE lessons by leading a skills session for the Year 2/3 class. The Year 5 children demonstrated clarity in expressing what they needed to do, showed support and gave guidance when needed and their words of encouragement were absolutely brilliant. Miss McGowan and Miss Homsin were so impressed and the Year 2/3 children all had a wonderful time! In English, the children have started exploring the works of William Shakespeare and have started to read an adapted version of Hamlet, The children’s understanding has been wonderful an there have been some great discussions about the text so far in Year 5! To end the week, Year 5 attended Mass where some of the class, in their role of Mini Vinnie, read beautifully. The children also had an extremely creative art lesson and have made a collagraph plate ready to print in the coming weeks to make a mixed media masterpiece inspired by Teis Albers and his artwork, Moonwalk.

Year 6

It’s been a busy week for the Year 6 children. In maths, they have been developing their understanding of angles in triangles and quadrilaterals, learning how to identify and calculate missing angles using key properties. In English, they have been interpreting poems, exploring how poets use language and structure to convey meaning and emotion. In R.E., the children have been learning about the life of St Peter, considering his role as a disciple and leader in the early Church, and writing about the significant moments and lessons from his journey of faith. Learning about St Peter is also helping them prepare for their Sacrament of Confirmation, as they reflect on his courage, commitment, and transformation through faith - qualities they are encouraged to develop in their own spiritual journey. In D.T., the children have been learning to identify and name the components of a steady hand game, developing their understanding of how electrical circuits work in practical applications. They have also been working on setting clear design criteria for their own games and have practised drawing their designs from three different perspectives to help plan and visualise their final product. They are looking forward to assembling and completing their electronic game.

Today, the Mini Vinnies led a beautiful whole school Mass, where Fr Richard reminded us all of the importance of living like Jesus. He encouraged us to show kindness, compassion, and generosity in our daily lives. As part of our mission, we have been asked to look out for and support everyone — not just those who live near us, but everyone in our community who may need a helping hand. The Mini Vinnies set a wonderful example of faith by being prayerful and reading so beautifully. Thank you to all the children for being so reverent. A special thank you to our families who attended, to Fr Richard for celebrating Mass in school and to Mrs Mallinson for the music.

At St Wulstan's, we are committed to minimising missed educational opportunities. We firmly believe that a strong community is one where all our children are present in school, on time, every day unless they are too unwell to do so. By adhering to this principle, we not only impart valuable life skills and help to foster enduring friendships, but we also prepare your child for future success. We will be launching a new reward in school called 'Attendance Achievers' - a scheme where at the end of each month, we will celebrate pupils who are showing an achievement within attendance such as improved attendance, improved punctuality, sustained excellent attendance etc. The children who receive an 'Attendance Achiever' reward will receive a certificate and will be able to choose a prize from the prize box!

If your child is due to start school in September 2025 (and was born between 1 September 2020-31 August 2021) the closing date for applying for a place was 15 January.  However, you can still apply for a late application by visiting www.worcestershire.gov.uk/schooladmissions.

If you require assistance, please contact Mrs Brown in the school office.
