Message from Mrs Brocklesby

Pupil Voice | Inverclyde Academy

At Saint Wulstan's we firmly believe pupil voice gives children responsibility and nurtures collaboration, confidence and leadership.

Pupil voice is a catalyst for learning, guiding and directing the route and shape that the curriculum takes.  As pupils progress up the school, the opportunities for pupils to lead their learning and contribute to school life deepens.

Yesterday children from Year 1-6 shared their feedback on the Geography curriculum. We aim for children to know more and remember more and this was certainly evident yesterday. The children spoke eloquently about the aspects of geography that they enjoyed and one of our Year 6 pupils even named all 23 countries in North America!

I was wowed by the knowledge of our pupils, well done everyone!

Next Week on Wednesday 9th October from 9:30-11:30 am and 1:30-3:00 pm, we will be holding an Open Day, for families looking to apply for a primary school place for September 2025.

It will be chance to meet staff and children, and see the range of subjects taught and find out about before school and after school provision.  I am looking forward to welcoming existing and new families to Saint Wulstan's.

Mrs Warnett's round up

Over the last few weeks in their PE lessons, Reception Class and Year 1 have been practising the fundamental skills of balancing, and bouncing, throwing and catching a ball. This week they developed these skills further and worked on their hopping skills. They showed the agility and balance to display this skill through hopscotch. The children have also been using their throwing and catching skills to work together on small group ball games. It is lovely to see the older children supporting the younger ones, whilst the Reception children look to Year 1 for guidance and challenge.

Year 2 and 3 braved the rain this week to walk to the post box to post their lovely story letters. The children have worked hard to write story letters to their family and friends, just like Beatrix Potter used to do! We hope that they enjoy our super stories and maybe write us a letter back!
The children were rewarded for their hard work by a visit to the local shop to buy some chocolate to use in our data collection work.
We are so grateful to the very kind family members who came with us on our walk. They helped us keep safe, counted money in the shop and helped us complete a traffic survey. Most importantly, they kept smiling despite the weather. Thank you!

Year 4
This week, Year 4 have learnt about Julius Caesar and emperor Claudius in their history lessons. The children used maps to understand where the attacks and invasion took place and used their chronological understanding to place some events from the lesson on a timeline. In D&T, the children have been looking at design criteria, target audience and themes while created a pavilion design. The children really enjoyed sharing their ideas and interests with their peers and are looking forward to building their models soon. Yesterday, the children celebrated National Poetry Day by reciting a poem called 'I ask the river' by Valerie Bloom. The children really impressed with their confidence when speaking and creativity tyring to bring the poem to life. In science, the children developed their measuring and recording skills by carrying out an investigation looking at the volume of sound over changing distances. The children will evaluate their investigation next week, having already noticed things that went well or could be changed next time.

Year 5
This week Year 5 combined their history skills with their performing arts skills to recite their poem, 'Viking Raid on Lindisfarne' by Marie Thom. The children read with such amazing expression and enthusiasm it was a splendid performance, well done! Throughout the week, the children looked at a number of poems in a range of styles and even had a go at writing their own poem using a black out style. In PE, the children used their geography skills to read maps to complete an orienteering activity and in DT, the children have begin to make their mechanisms for their pop up books - what a busy week!

Year 6
The Year 6 children have been busy reading lots of poetry this week. Most of the poetry has been written by Michael Rosen. The poetry was linked to the Mayan topic where the children have discussed migration, empathy, kindness, and the dignity of the human person. The children also enjoyed performing their poem 'Things That Happen When The Teacher Isn't Here' to Year 6 families. Thank you to everyone who attended - it was lovely to see you all. On Thursday, the children had a taster morning at Hagley Catholic High School where they could visit the school and participate in some lessons. Thank you to Mrs Imrie and Mr Thomas for organising such a lovely morning. To end the busy week, in P.E., the children have placed themselves in positions where they needed to give clear instructions and keep their partner safe. They also worked on navigating successfully across and through obstacles while blindfolded.

4 October - Feast day of St. Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis lived his life serving God and fulfilling the teachings of Jesus. He is remembered for living humbly and showing kindness towards all living things. He believed that God was reflected in nature and referred to animals as his brothers and sisters. Francis died in Assisi in October 1226. In 1228, he was canonised (made a saint) by the Roman Catholic church. On the Feast of St. Francis, church services remember the life of St. Francis, and pets can be blessed. He is remembered as the patron saint of animals, traders and the environment.

October  - Month of the Holy Rosary
As a special activity this October, we're providing Rosary Prayer Boxes to our students. These boxes provide a beautiful opportunity for families to pray together. Please capture a photo of your prayer time and send it to the school office:

Thursday 10 October 2024 - World Mental Health Day
Next Thursday is World Mental Health Day and we invite the children to wear yellow. Please don't feel the need to purchase any yellow clothing. The children are encouraged to wear their own clothes with a yellow item (e.g. hair clip, ribbon, bracelet, etc). We ask that children bring in £1.00 to donate to YoungMinds charity. Thank you for your support.
