KIND HEARTS AND A HUNGER FOR JUSTICE

Today, Years 3 and  4 led Mass focusing on kind hearts and a hunger for justice. This message links closely to the ambitions of our Wildlife Warriors, who are committed to caring for our community and reducing litter. Through their efforts, we are reminded of the importance of taking responsibility for our environment and looking after the world around us.

This week, our school launched Litter Picking Week during assembly. Key Stage 2 have been enjoying litter picking adventures around the school and local area.

Litter picking is an important activity as it helps keep our environment clean, protects wildlife, and teaches us responsibility for our community. Due to the weather, not all children have been able to take part in these outings, but everyone has been enthusiastic about helping make a difference.

We look forward to more opportunities for all pupils to get involved in this important activity!

Reception

Reception have had a wonderful week filled with curiosity, creativity and lots of hands-on learning. In English, they have been enjoying the story How to Grow a Dragon. The children have loved designing their own dragons and have been practising giving clear verbal instructions on how to grow them, helping to build confidence and develop their oracy skills.

In Maths, the children have been comparing quantities and exploring which amounts are greater or smaller. In RE, they have been role playing baptism as they deepened their understanding of this very special sacrament. In PE, Reception have been developing their spatial awareness through activities focused on space and direction. In Science, they have been investigating which materials would make the best raincoat, sharing their ideas and making predictions. The week ended with a magical Forest School session where the children practised knot-tying to create their own dragon wands.

It has been a joyful week of learning and the children have shown great enthusiasm, teamwork and imagination throughout. Well done Reception!

Year 1 and 2

Mrs Price, Mrs Tasker and Mrs Harris have been so proud of the class this week, especially for their superb writing! The class have been reading and writing about 'Avocado Baby' by John Burningham. The children have been learning how to write question and exclamatory sentences. The children have really impressed us with their exciting ideas and vocabulary. We have seen lots of BEAUTIFUL handwriting too! Well done! In art, the children have been learning how to create textures using different tools and techniques. Inspired by natural objects, the children used a range of tools to create different textures. The children applied their knowledge of primary and secondary colours to do some colour mixing to help create intended effects. In maths, the class have started a new unit on multiplication and division and have made a great start at counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. In PSHE, the children have continued learning about their bodies, learning about hygiene. The class wrote super instruction texts on brushing teeth, identifying some misconceptions they had about looking after their teeth. They could explain why looking after baby teeth is just as important as looking after adult teeth. The class have been lucky enough to have been joined this half term by Miss McComb, a student teacher. They have greatly benefited from having another adult working in the classroom with them. Miss McComb will return later in the term to continue to work with the class.

Year 3 / Year 4

This week, the children have enjoyed writing speech sentences linked to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They have really enjoyed getting to know the characters and had lots of questions about the White Witch and Edmund's first interaction. In RE, the children have been consolidating their understanding of the parts of the Mass and have been confidently using the Bible. They applied this knowledge in this morning's class Mass were they were able to recall the key themes confidently. The children were really confident with their readings and followed very reverently. In art this week, the children applied their mixing skills and understanding of tints and shades to new techniques such as stippling, washes, dabbing and pointillism. The children were able to explore these new techniques to paint an object that looks three-dimensional and not flat. In maths, the children completed their 'Multiplication and Division' unit by using written methods for division to divided 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers with exchanges and remainders. Through lots of practise, the children were able to complete calculations and answer words problems.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have completed their much-anticipated Star Write retell inspired by The Way Back Home. The children have truly been superstar writers, confidently incorporating key Year 5 skills into their work. They have used speech to develop character and speech to advance the action, ensuring dialogue had a clear purpose. In addition, many pupils experimented with powerful techniques such as personification to bring their settings to life. The quality of writing produced has been impressive, and the effort shown by all has been fantastic.

In Science, the children explored the wonders of the solar system, researching different planets and working collaboratively to create engaging Top Trumps cards for each one. They demonstrated excellent teamwork and curiosity while deepening their understanding of space.

In Maths, Year 5 have begun an exciting new unit on long multiplication. The children have approached this challenge with determination and focus. On Monday, they will be applying their multiplication skills to solve a range of problem solving questions.

On Wednesday, Year 5 had the amazing opportunity to serve their local community by taking part in a litter pick with Mrs Blanchfield. Despite braving the cold and rain, the children worked incredibly hard and collected over 1,000 pieces of litter — with the oldest item dating back to 1999!

A special thank you goes to Mrs Cull, Mr Collins and Mrs Grainger for supporting Year 5 during our litter picking session.

Well done, Year 5, for another brilliant week of learning and living out your virtues so proudly!

Year 6

Year 6 have had a fantastic week packed full of learning and enrichment. In English, the children completed a star write, retelling Chapter 4 of Pig Heart Boy. They focused carefully on accurate speech punctuation and used dialogue effectively to move the action on within the story. In Maths, the children have been forming and solving two-step equations, showing great resilience and problem-solving skills. With the amazing guidance of Mrs Blanchfield, Year 6 also took part in a local community litter pick. Despite the grotty weather, the children did an amazing job, collecting over 700 pieces of litter — including a can dating back to 1991! We are incredibly proud of their positive attitude and commitment to caring for our local environment.

In Art, the children have continued exploring a range of different artists and this week have been inspired by the work of Fiona Rae, creating their own vibrant abstract artwork. In Science, they explored the effects of alcohol on the human body, engaging thoughtfully with the topic.

During RE this week, the children studied Psalm 139 before having a go at creating their own version, looking at the meaning and structure and then reflecting on their relationships with God in a mature and meaningful way. These were beautiful to read and Miss McGowan was very impressed.

Well done, Year 6 — a brilliant week all round!

Transport Meeting from Stourport to Hagley – Friday 12th February at 5:30pm

We are holding a meeting to discuss possible transport provision from Stourport to Hagley. The meeting can be attended in person or virtually.

Ahead of the meeting, we will complete a costing exercise to discuss potential transport costs, and a data analysis to look at the number of pupils who may apply to Hagley in the coming years. Mr Hodgson will be attending to answer questions and provide advice.

Who can attend:

  • Parents of pupils who already attend Hagley

  • Parents of children from Reception to Year 6, so we can gauge interest for future years

Please confirm your attendance and let us know whether you will attend in person or if you need a Microsoft Teams link by emailing ebrocklesby@emmausmac.com.

After the transport meeting, we will hold a short discussion about setting up a PTA at Saint Wulstan's. This is a great opportunity to develop our school community and work together to support our children and families.

We look forward to seeing you there!
