Reception
The Reception children have had a fantastic start to the New Year. In English, they have been enjoying the story The Tiger Who Came to Tea and have created wonderful menus for the tiger, as well as writing some super sentences. In Maths, the children have been practising their subitising skills and matching numbers to quantities. In Science, they have been learning about materials and their properties and enjoyed going on a materials hunt. In Music, the children have been learning action songs and exploring why we use actions when we sing. They also enjoyed their first Computing lesson this week, making good progress in learning how to use a mouse and mouse pad. In addition, the children had lots of fun at Forest School and enjoyed exploring artefacts linked to our new topic on China. Well done Reception!
KS1
Thank you so much to our families for your very kind cards and gifts at the end of term. It was so kind of you and we really appreciate it.
Lower Key Stage 2
It was lovely to welcome the children back this week and listen to some of the wonderful things they did and received over the Christmas holiday. They hit the ground running this week and have worked really hard, showing great enthusiasm towards their learning. In maths, the children have been finding areas, comparing shapes sizes and creating their own rectilinear shapes with great accuracy and confidence. Many house points were handed out throughout the week for some excellent work. In English, the children were using persuasive questions and emotive language to persuade a lord to include a misunderstood dragon in a festive feast! The children showed a strong sense of justice and were determined to change the lord's mind. In geography, the children researched earthquakes in Italy and the impact they have on the Italian people. They then created very detailed information booklets to tell people some of the key things they need to do before, during and after an earthquake to keep themselves as safe as possible. In science, the children planned and carried out an investigation to see how the volume of sound changes as you move further from the sound source. The children needed to make it a fair test, use the equipment effectively and analyse the data they collected. Next week, the class starts their forest school journey. On Tuesday afternoon, the class will be heading up to Forest School to start their first session and will need:
- To wear active wear to school (no uniform needed). This MUST BE long-armed and long-legged.
- Layers of clothing will be essential for your child to keep warm.
- A waterproof coat and waterproof trousers.
- Hat and gloves (gloves will be removed for tool work).
- Sturdy boots or shoes. Wellies are also acceptable.
NB: If anyone has any waterproof clothing or wellies that are no longer needed and are willing to donate them to school, they will be gratefully received. Thank you.
Year 5
Year 5 have had a fantastic first week back! In English, they explored a new poetry form: haikus. The children wrote some truly beautiful winter-themed haikus and are very much looking forward to next week’s Star Write, where final pieces will be shared. In maths, Year 5 completed their final lessons on fractions, focusing on adding to a mixed number and adding two mixed numbers. The children worked incredibly hard and showed great determination throughout.
In geography, Year 5 worked collaboratively in groups to compile information about different Mayan cities. Each group included a human features expert, physical features expert, trading expert and a reporter. The children embraced their roles, producing and presenting informative and impressive posters. Well done to everyone for such a positive and hardworking start to the term – and enjoy the snow! ❄️
Year 6
Year 6 have had a great start to the New Year and have returned to school focused and ready to work hard. In English, the children have been composing an informal letter based on the Christmas Truce, writing in role as a soldier writing home to their family to describe what happened. They have been extremely creative and have produced some amazing ideas. Next week, the children will be editing and up-levelling their work to create their Star Write.
In PE, the children have started new gymnastics and dance units. In dance, Year 6 have begun learning about the Haka. They explored the origins and importance of the dance and started to learn the Ka Mate Haka.
In maths, the children have been working hard on ratio and have done a fantastic job applying their times table knowledge, which has really supported their learning in this topic. In science, they have begun learning about the circulatory system of the human body, and in history, Year 6 have started exploring the reasons why World War Two began. Their enthusiasm and interest in these new topics has been brilliant and the children are very keen to learn more!
It has been a wonderful start back – well done, Year 6!

QUESTIONING MINDS
QUESTIONING MINDS
Thank you for your responses regarding arranging transport to Hagley High School.
I will be arranging a meeting in January with Councillor Karl Perks and a representative from Hagley to discuss the possibility of establishing a school bus service from Stourport to Kidderminster, enabling pupils to catch the train to Hagley High School and possibly other schools including Heybridge, King Edwards Stourbridge, as well as various Birmingham schools.
Health Watch Worcestershire has asked us to share the following information with parents:
Parent Carer Needs Assessment Survey
If you are caring for a disabled child up to the age of 16 years old, we want to understand your experience of requesting a Parent Carer Needs Assessment. Your responses will help highlight what is working well and where improvements may be needed.
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive universal free school meals. However, based on your income, you may be eligible to a different free school meal type. This can be applied for even when your child is still in Reception, Years 1 & 2. This entitles you to a free school meal voucher during the holidays and also continued free school meals until the end of Year 6. If you think you may qualify for these, visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk
