Message from Mrs Brocklesby

The Archdiocese of Birmingham are launching a 'Pledge £1' initiative. The aim of the initiative is for every child to raise £1 for Father Hudson's Care.

They provide a range of services to people across the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham and offer friendship, care and support to everyone.  Father Hudson's Care work with people of different ages, backgrounds, races, nationalities, and disabilities and ensure that everyone has impartial and fair treatment.

At Saint Wulstan's on Saint George's Day we will be asking children to donate £1 to wear colours to represent either Saint George, Saint Patrick, Saint Andrew or Saint David. All money raised will be donated to Father Hudson's Care. Thank you in advance for your support.

Weekly Round Up From Mrs Warnett

In their PE lessons Reception Class are continuing to build their fundamental movement skills. After concentrating on balance last half term, the children are now using their new skills to support them with jumping this half term. So far the class have been practising a variety of different ways of jumping and the skills needed to improve their ability. This week they have been focussing on jumping for distance. It has been lovely to see the children working together and helping each other to improve their physical skills.

Key Stage 1 have been learning about the equator, the poles and climate in Geography this week.  In Art and Design they have created their designs in readiness to produce their clay houses.  In Music they have been learning about rhythm and pitch and creating music to reflect the sounds under the oceans.

Year 3 l

In their PE lesson this week Year 3 have continued to hone their cricket skills. They have been focusing one picking the ball up one handed and then throwing it and have also had a go at some bowling.  In their art lesson the children have created part of their scrolls using the same method that the Ancient Egyptians would have used to make paper out of papyrus. They used strips of brown paper, soaked them in PVA glue and layered them onto some greaseproof paper. First vertically and then horizontally. They really enjoyed this practical activity. Well done Year 3 on another excellent week!

Year 4

Year 4 started the week investigating simple series circuits in science. The children built circuits, explained the job of each component and tested circuits to see if they were complete or incomplete. In History, the children looked at features of the Indus Valley settlements and they explained how the layout and features of the cities compared to modern day New York City and London. The children explored how rice is grown in Indonesia in this week's geography lesson and looked at some of the negative impact humans have on the environment such as deforestation. The children then suggested some solutions to combat these issues and were passionate about making a change. Well done!

Year 5

Year 5 have been working hard again this week and have been historians, artists, scientists and much much more! In maths, the children have been starting to find the links between fractions, decimals and percentages and were pleasantly surprised to find out that the links were much simpler than they thought! In history, Year 5 have continued to investigate everyday life in Ancient Greece and looked at the difference between primary and secondary sources and considered the reliability of types of sources. In art, the children were exploring a range of artworks and were starting to express their opinions in relation to the art studied. Children were then given the opportunity to explore selected art work and begin to experiment and explore different drawing techniques and materials. A great week Year 5, well done!

Year 6

This week Year 6 have started a new unit in maths: statistics. They have been interpreting simple line graphs and analysing the information that can be gathered from them. Then they drew line graphs using given information and the children were encouraged to choose appropriate scales based on the numbers given. In Science, the Year 6 children have been exploring how light can change direction when it travels from one medium to another. They explored how refraction occurs and created explanations of why this happens. In P.E., the children were tasked with the challenge that called for problem-solving skills, teamwork and stamina. They took part in a jumping challenge that required a few attempts, however, the children showed great perseverance! Another great week! Well done, Year 6!

Mini Vinnies & B-Attitude Chaplaincy Team

This week, Hagley's chaplaincy team helped the Mini Vinnies put together essential 'Vinnie packs' for the homeless. ‘Vinnie packs’ take their name from the St Vincent de Paul Society, who encourage all to help the less fortunate. Twenty packs were assembled with hygiene items. The children all thoroughly enjoyed packing the items and knowing that they were helping others. It was also a good opportunity for us to  teach the children about the importance of social justice and how they can make a difference through their prayers and actions. A huge thank you to all families for your generous donations. Your kindness is greatly appreciated!

1st March - Feast of Saint David

David is the patron saint of Wales. It is known that he became a priest, engaged in missionary work, and founded many monasteries, including his principal abbey in southwestern Wales. Saint David is pictured standing on a mound with a dove on his shoulder. The legend is that once while he was preaching a dove descended to his shoulder and the earth rose to lift him high above the people so that he could be heard.

Prayer written by a Year 6 Mini Vinnie:

Dear Lord,

we thank you for giving us St. David, as an example of holiness.

St. David, you chose to serve God your whole life.

Pray for me so that I serve God as wholeheartedly as you did.

St. David, pray for us!

Amen.

Year 5 Mass - Feast of Saint David

Thank you to the Year 5 children for leading today's Mass. The children were reverent and prayerful. It was lovely to see so many families join us. Thank you for being part our Mass.

World Book Day - Thursday 7th March

Next Thursday is World Book Day and all children (and staff) are invited to come dressed into school as a book character. It will be an exciting day and teachers will have fun activities planned for the day. Children are also encouraged to bring in up to three books they no longer want, to swap in school with other children. This event will be held in the school library and led by School Council to promote reading for pleasure and sustainability. The children will receive their World Book Day £1 token on the day.

School Disco

We  plan to have a school disco during the last week of this half term (date to be confirmed) and are looking for parent volunteers to help run the event eg selling refreshments.  Does anyone have any disco lights which we could borrow to add to the occasion?  Also, does anyone have DJ equipment and would like to be our resident DJ for the evening?  If you would like to volunteer, please contact the school office - 01299 877808/enquiry_wul@emmausmac.com
