Message from Mrs Brocklesby

Next Friday at 9:15 am we will be gathering as a community in school to celebrate our annual Harvest Mass. It is a good opportunity to come together and thank God for the wonderful Harvest gifts and donations for our local food bank. Please can children bring in a grocery (tins, packets, vegetables etc) donation for Harvest on Friday. 

This week was one of the highlights of the school year for me. It was wonderful to welcome prospective parents to Saint Wulstan's on our Open day.
This year Mrs Warnett and I proudly gave parents a tour of the school. It was wonderful to show parents the creative and engaging curriculum we have created. There was a fantastic buzz of learning that could be seen throughout the school. Our children were wonderful ambassadors demonstrating a love for learning. If you know any families with school age children, please tell them about Saint Wulstan's and ask them to contact the school office.

Mrs Warnett's Round Up

The children in Reception and Year 1 have been developing their observational drawing skills this week. The children really impressed the staff with their drawings of pumpkins. They demonstrated the different skills they have been learning during this art unit in their final piece of work. Year 1 enjoyed sharing their artwork with Reception and were brilliant at explaining what they had been doing and included some of their recently learnt vocabulary in their explanations.   

Year 2 and 3 experienced a fantastic workshop led by the wonderful Bournville Village Trust, where history and geography truly came to life! The children embarked on a journey through time, discovering the contrasting lives of rich and poor children in the past. They found out how the wealthier children attended school while those less fortunate were often sent to work in factories. This enlightening experience provided the children with a deeper understanding of social history and the importance of education for all. The workshop also introduced them to the vision of George and Richard Cadbury, who aspired to uplift their workers' living conditions through the creation of Bournville. The children were inspired by this innovation and quickly jumped into action by designing their very own villages, applying their geography skills in this exciting challenge! We are incredibly proud of the children for their enthusiasm and creativity during the workshop. This hands-on experience not only enriched their geographical and  historical knowledge but also fostered teamwork and critical thinking.
 
Year 4 have been busy this week and have been applying their teamwork and communication skills in other areas of the curriculum outside of their PE lessons. The children have began designing their framework and pavilion themes and will begin work constructing these in pairs next lesson. As a class, the children have been developing their musical vocabulary to describe the tempo and dynamics of musical pieces. They are now learning different body percussion parts and will compose a piece of music using these. In geography this week, the children labelled the parts of a river from its source to the mouth. The children had lots of questions about a river's journey and we look forward to answering these over the coming weeks. Finally, the children are making great progress in their swimming lessons. Some children are growing in confidence and becoming less reliant on water aids to support them, while others are confidently jumping into the water and performing a range of strokes independently. 
 
Year 5 have been working very hard this week and have been working collaboratively in groups to find out about real life people who display the Beatitudes taught to us by Jesus at the Sermon on the Mount. The children found it was very interesting to think about how different people display these behaviours in their actions, and to consider the positive impact people such as Marcus Rashford and David Attenborough have had on the world around us. The children have now also made a lever in their pop-up book, it was very tricky but they all persevered and have done really well to produce this mechanism. Next week, the children will be making their final mechanism, a slider. It will then be time to decorate and add captions to their pages. In Science the children used parachutes that they had made to test whether the size of parachute effects the time it takes to fall. The children had to ensure that they were carrying out a fair test and were able to speak like scientists to explain their results. Well done Year 5!
 
This week, the Year 6 children have been working hard on their writing. They have focused on up levelling their vocabulary with figurative language, descriptive phrases, and relative clauses. Their determination to be start writers is paying off. In R.E., the children analysed the role of Moses the prophet who led the Hebrew slaves (Israelites) out of Egypt. He also helped them form a special relationship with God. The children did a great job outlining Moses' strengths and weaknesses. In Geography, the Year 6 children have been learning all about the different biomes on our planet. In Maths, they have been consolidating their knowledge of prime numbers, multiples, factors, square and cube numbers. To end the week, they have received the Wellbeing Ambassadors and Sports Crew training from Mr Lindley and they are looking forward to sharing their skills with the younger children in school.
 
 
October  - Month of the Holy Rosary
As a special activity this October, we're providing Rosary Prayer Boxes to our students. These boxes provide a beautiful opportunity for families to pray together. Please capture a photo of your prayer time and send it to the school office:

Launch of Wulstan's Wildlife Warriors
Two Year 6 pupils have expressed interest in starting an eco-club at St Wulstan's to develop strategies that sustain and enhance our school grounds and the local area.
Both Year 6 children presented their ideas, raised awareness of environmental issues, and suggested a range of activities that could take place at our school soon. Thank you to both children for their great presentation!

School Disco - A glow themed disco is planned for Thursday 14 November in the school hall. More details to follow!

Friday 25 October is a Non Uniform Day to raise money in support of the Little People Uk charity. Children can come to school in non uniform with green being the colour of support. This could be something like a green hair hairclip/ribbon, bracelet or hat. Please don't feel the need to purchase any green clothing.

SCHOOL UNIFORM UPDATE

I JUST WANTED TO MAKE YOU AWARE THAT FROM OCTOBER 14TH MARKS AND SPENCER'S WILL NO LONGER BE OUR UNIFORM PROVIDER.

I would also like to thank any parents who shared their views about the cost of uniforms. We are looking into sourcing a range of providers and will keep you updated.

Free School Meals Application

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive universal free school meals.  However, based on your income, you may be entitled to a different free school meal type which continues after Year 2.  This also entitles you to a free school meal voucher during the holidays.  If you think you may qualify for these, please contact Mrs Brown in the school office for a form or visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk or contact the team on 01905 845280.  They will require your date of birth and national insurance number to check whether you are eligible.
