KIND HEARTS AND A HUNGER FOR JUSTICE
It was great to see so many parents join us, both in person and virtually last night, to discuss transport arrangements for Hagley High School. Parents are now keen to gather data through a working party to gauge interest in organising a bus or minibus service from Stourport to either Kidderminster Train Station or directly to Hagley High School. The working party will collaborate to assess demand and explore the available options.
Mr. Hodgson, Principal at Hagley High School, will also be surveying current parents of pupils who live in Stourport to gather their input.
I will be contacting Councillor Karl Perks to ask for his support in exploring local transport options and helping us liaise with the relevant authorities.
To ensure we act swiftly, the working party will be meeting during the week beginning 23rd February. The exact date and time will be confirmed with volunteers.
If you would like to be part of the working party, please email Mrs Brocklesby at ebrocklesby@emmausmac.com. We would greatly value the use of your skills, particularly in areas such as marketing, analysis, and strategy.
Following the transport meeting, there was a short meeting to discuss the PTA. It was clear at the meeting that everyone feels the PTA is a community group that welcomes parents, carers, family members, and parishioners.
The next PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, 5th March at 6:00 PM. All parents, carers, and staff members are automatically members of the PTA. If you know anyone who would be interested in attending, please invite them along.
The PTA provides an opportunity to:
Meet and connect with other parents, carers, and staff
Support school initiatives and events
Share ideas and get involved in community projects
It was wonderful to see so many parents at Parents’ Evening this week, and I look forward to welcoming parents to school on Wednesday, 25th February. It will be a great opportunity to meet staff, discuss progress, and engage with your child’s learning.
To prepare for Lent, today in school we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a pancake sale. Lent is a season of reflection and preparation leading up to Easter, encouraging acts of prayer, fasting, and giving. The pancake sale was a fun way for children and staff to come together and mark the start of Lent. All money raised will go towards buying new equipment for the children to enjoy. Thank you to Mrs Grainger, Mrs Cull and Mrs Bianco for their help, making it a great success.

Reception
Reception have had an incredibly busy and exciting week!
In English, the children have been enjoying the story The Great Race, which has also linked beautifully with their topic learning about Chinese New Year. They have shown great enthusiasm in discussing the story, sharing ideas, and making connections with what they have been learning in class. In Maths, Reception have been developing their number knowledge by exploring one more and one less than a given number. The children have worked hard to build confidence with their counting skills and have impressed staff with their growing understanding. Forest School brought a particularly memorable experience this week, as the children had their first opportunity to learn about fire lighting. They listened carefully to the safety rules and precautions before having a go themselves. Everyone worked brilliantly and, with support, they were all able to successfully start a fire using a flint striker — a fantastic achievement! In PE, the children have been practising underarm throwing, developing their coordination and control through a range of fun activities and games. As part of their Chinese New Year learning, the children also sampled Chinese food and had a go at using chopsticks — a wonderful opportunity to try something new! They have also been busy creating paper dragons, ready to recreate traditional dragon dances, and have produced some lovely Valentine’s crafts too.
Well done, Reception, for all your hard work this week. Enjoy your break — you have truly earned it
KS1
This week in history the children were fascinated to learn about what life was like for children and families during the industrial revolution. They were very happy that they can come to school to learn and play with their friends, rather than working twelve hours a day in factories! In PE, the children have really enjoyed using gymnastics apparatus and putting together a sequence of rolls and balances. Everyone did a super job - well done! Year 1 and 2 read ‘The Calming of the Storm’ this week and had an exciting time acting out the story and showing different emotions throughout. We talked about faith and what helps us when we are frightened. The children thoroughly enjoyed getting into the story and showed great dramatic skills! In English, the children have read 'The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark' by Jill Tomlinson this week and are loving this funny and charming story. They have written list poems, using their knowledge of nocturnal animals to write some beautiful poems. We have loved sharing them and reading them aloud. In art, the children are planning their own collages and decorated paper with differently textured prints, in readiness for collage-making after half term. We have been delighted to celebrate some children who made it onto 'gold' on the class Zone Board this week. We are so proud of our golden children, but also each and every child for their hard work this have term.
Year 3 / Year 4
The children have continued their wonderful work this week and ended a busy half term on a high. In history, the children researched what ancient civilisations traded and how they paid for the good they bought. The children were amazed by some of the materials traded and how some of the ways of trading are similar to what we use today. At Forest School, the children ended their block of sessions with a lesson fire lighting, fire safety and fire extinguishing. They roasted marshmallows and squeezed them into biscuits to make S'mores and washed it down with a hot chocolate. Mr Tasker has been so pleased with how the children adapted to the natural surroundings and showed resilience and enthusiasm in changing weather. In science, the children labelled and described 'The Water Cycle' and hot many questions to ask about life on our planet. They used their understanding of liquids and gases to explain the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. The children began their unit of 'Length and Perimeter' in maths, using rulers and conversion charts to understand how the different units of measure (mm, cm, m and km) are used to measure objects and distances of different sizes.
The children have worked incredibly hard this half term and should be very proud of their efforts. They need to ensure they have a safe and restful break, recharging themselves ready for Spring 2.
Year 5
What a fantastic half term it has been for Year 5!
This week, Year 5 proudly completed their Star Write based on Field Trip to the Moon. The children focused carefully on using figurative language to create vivid imagery and on including commas for parenthesis to add extra detail to their sentences. Year 5 worked incredibly hard to incorporate both of these skills into their writing, producing some truly fabulous Star Writes. Miss Homsin has thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every one. In Maths, Year 5 have been tackling problem-solving with multiplication. The children have shown great determination when breaking down multi-step problems and applying their long multiplication skills with increasing confidence. Their resilience and focus have really shone through.
In Art, Year 5 have been exploring different drawing decisions, carefully considering how artists create texture and depth within an image. The children experimented with a range of techniques and materials, focusing particularly on how tone and texture can be developed using charcoal. They showed fantastic concentration and creativity as they refined their shading skills.
In History, Year 5 have been learning about the Tudor monarchs and the impact of the Reformation during the Tudor period. The children were tasked with writing a newspaper article for “The Reformation Times”, explaining the causes of the Reformation. Their historical understanding and journalistic flair were impressive! Year 5 also thoroughly enjoyed role-playing Tudor monarchs — everyone fully embodied their roles and really got stuck in.
What a brilliant half term Year 5 have had — well done to each and every one of them for their hard work, enthusiasm and positive attitude.
Homework:
Half term homework has been set by Miss Homsin on Purple Mash. Year 5 can log on and access their homework through the ToDo section. This will be due back on Tuesday 24th February.
Enjoy a well-earned break, Year 5! 🌟
Year 6
Year 6 have had a wonderful half term and a brilliant start to 2026 – they are definitely ready for a well-earned break!
This week, the children have continued reading Pig Heart Boy and have written some fantastic diary entries in the role of Mum. They showed great empathy and understanding of the character’s thoughts and feelings. Linking with our History learning, the children also wrote diary entries focused on VE Day. They studied the key events that led up to VE Day, listened carefully to Winston Churchill’s famous speech, and watched footage of the celebrations in London. Using these powerful sources as inspiration, they produced thoughtful and reflective pieces of writing.
We were also incredibly lucky to have a very special show-and-tell this week. A member of the class brought in some amazing World War II artefacts that belonged to her great-grandfather. It was a privilege to see and handle these items, and we are very grateful that they were shared with us. Year 6 had lots of thoughtful questions, and Mr Tasker thoroughly enjoyed seeing the artefacts too. Thank you so much!
In Science, the children explored what is transported in our blood and revisited how blood travels around our bodies. They demonstrated great prior knowledge and asked some excellent questions. In Music, Year 6 have just completed a unit about Theme and Variations. They looked at Mozart's Theme and Variations on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and wrote their own - changing tempo and pitch, octaves and the pentatonic scale. The children were also able to perform these confidently! Well done!
In PE, the children completed their work on the Haka and confidently performed their routines – what a fantastic way to end the half term!
Well done, Year 6, for such a super half term. Make sure you get plenty of rest so you are ready to return refreshed and prepared to continue working hard!
We have a stock of pre-loved school uniform, kept at the back of the hall. If you wish to access this, please do so at the end of the school day. We are rather short of red polo shirts (aged 8 years and upwards) and red PE shorts (aged 8 years and upwards). If you have any of these you no longer need, we would appreciate your donations. We don't need donations of any other uniform at the moment, thank you.
