FORMING CHRIST CENTERED PILGRIMS OF HOPE

On Monday, we will be celebrating the Feast of Saint Wulstan. Saint Wulstan was a kind and caring Bishop who lived in England over 900 years ago. He was known for helping the poor, standing up for people who were treated unfairly, and living a simple life focused on prayer and service. Saint Wulstan reminds us of the importance of kindness, courage, and caring for others, especially those in need.

During the day, children will take part in a special assembly, where they will learn more about the life of Saint Wulstan and the values he stood for, such as kindness, helping others, and living a caring life. Throughout the day, the children will also enjoy a range of fun and educational activities, including arts and crafts, drama and group discussions, all designed to celebrate the life of our Patron Saint and reflect on his message.

As a special treat, all children can wear their own clothes and they will enjoy cake together as part of the celebrations at lunchtime.

QUESTIONING MINDS

Reception

Reception class have had another great week of learning. In Maths, the children have been finding one more and one less than a given number, as well as ordering numbers. In English, they have continued to practise correct letter formation and have been sequencing sentences to retell a story. In their topic work, the children have been learning more about China. During Forest School, they have begun learning how to safely use a knife to shape wood, developing both confidence and practical skills. In Music, they have been exploring the beat by clapping and dancing along to songs.

Well done, Reception, for another fantastic week!

Year 1 and 2

Year 1 and 2 have worked hard on some tricky maths this week! They have been learning how to use maths facts, such as number bonds and adding 10, to quickly solve calculations. The children all tried really hard and showed perseverance when things got tricky! Well done-we are very proud of you! In English, the children enjoyed reading a story called 'Welcome Home Bear' by Il Sung Na, learning lots about animals and their habitats. The children worked hard to re-tell this longer story, working on openers and the conjunction 'but'. In PE, the children have been learning how to perform different types of rolls with care and control. As you can see from the photos, they are really enjoyed their gymnastics lessons this term! In RE, the class read about Mary and Joseph's journey to Egypt to escape King Herod and enjoyed looking at globes and maps to see their journeys.

Year 3 and Year 4

This week, the children have had a very practical week with investigations and Forest School. In science, the children had to investigate which material was best used for sound insulation. They planned the investigation, made predictions, measured decibels using a meter reader and recorded results. The children were very excited on Tuesday for their first Forest School session. The first session focused on recognising the boundaries, navigating the environment and games that developed trust and respect. In geography, the children researched some tourist attractions, the top five traded goods and what different types of food that can be grown in Italy. They then used this new knowledge to compare Italy to the United Kingdom. In maths, the children started their second unit on multiplication and division and have really grown in confidence when using their times table facts to answer questions.

Note: Mr Tasker would very grateful if children came to Forest School on Tuesday wearing clothing and footwear that is appropriate to be outside in all weather as it will make your child feel more comfortable and warm. Many thanks!

Year 5

Year 5 have had a fantastic second week back and have continued to show enthusiasm and curiosity across all areas of learning.

In Maths, the children have been building on their understanding of fractions. They have been focusing on breaking a whole into equal parts, exploring how fractions represent parts of a whole through practical activities and problem-solving. Pupils have been developing confidence in recognising and explaining fractions using clear mathematical language.

In RE, the class revisited the Christmas story. Through “hot seating” activities, the children took turns stepping into the role of Herod, discussing his thoughts and feelings at different points in the story. This encouraged thoughtful discussion, empathy, and deeper understanding of character motivation.

In Science, Year 5 have been investigating the effects of air resistance. The children are currently in the process of planning and carrying out experiments, making predictions, and beginning to think about how air resistance impacts falling objects in everyday life.

In Geography, the focus has been on using different types of maps to develop a better understanding of the physical and human features of Mesoamerica. The children compared the landscape to that of the UK and engaged in lively debates about which country would be better suited for maritime travel, supporting their opinions with geographical reasoning.

It has been a busy and productive week, and Year 5 continue to impress with their engagement and thoughtful contributions across the curriculum.

Year 6

This week, Year 6 have been incredibly busy – as always! In English, the children produced an amazing star write, crafting letters from a soldier writing home. They carefully considered the language they used and how to ensure their letters conveyed the emotions and experiences of a young man at war. In Gymnastics, the children developed routines and sequences based on different jumps, thinking carefully about how each movement could be performed with control and how the jumps could be smoothly linked together. In Maths, the children have worked hard to develop their understanding of ratio, tackling this challenging topic very impressively. They have also continued their work on the Haka in PE, exploring how they could create their own powerful versions. In Science, Year 6 looked in more detail at the heart, learning about its different parts and functions. In History, the children examined a range of sources to consider the impact of evacuation during the war and thought about how Historians use sources and how we can evaluate the reliability of different sources and considered why this is so important. Year 6 finished the week by being introduced to their new class novel, Pig Heart Boy, which will provide inspiration for their writing over the next few weeks.
