Message from Mrs Brocklesby
Next week is National Recycling Week! It’s a great time for us to think about how we can help our planet by reusing, reducing, and recycling. At school, we’ll be revisiting ways to sort our rubbish, how recycling turns old items into something new, and why it’s important to take care of the environment. At our school, we all do our part by using the green bins for recycling, the black bins for general rubbish, and the food waste bin for scraps.
I am sure at home you are recycling paper, bottles, and cans, and finding clever ways to use things again instead of throwing them away. Together, small actions can make a big difference!
As part of the week, we will also be focusing on litter picking at playtimes to keep our school grounds clean and tidy. It’s a great way for everyone to work together and show we care about our environment.
We’d love to see how our families care for the environment at home too, please send in a photo of something you do, like recycling, composting, planting, or reusing materials. Everyone who sends in a photograph will receive a prize next Friday. We can make a big difference for our planet!
To raise money for an exciting opportunity for the Reception class, later in the year, the Reception children have come up with an idea of having a scarecrow competition. To raise as much money as possible, the competition is open to all the children at St Wulstan’s with an entry fee of £1.
The scarecrows can be any size and made from any material. The entries will be displayed on the grassy bank by the school’s main foyer, for everyone to enjoy.
The closing date for entries will be Monday 20 October. The winning entry will be announced in school that week, with a prize for the winner.
There is a local scarecrow festival at Pattingham Village (7 miles west of Wolverhampton) from 26-28 September, if you would like to have a family day out and get some inspiration. (The popular Belbroughton scarecrow festival isn’t running this year).
We look forward to seeing your imaginative creations!

Reception
Reception have had a busy week full of learning and fun. In PE, they worked in teams to complete challenges using their fine and gross motor skills. In phonics, they learned new sounds and started blending to read words. Science focused on Autumn, with children exploring seasonal changes, enjoying the book The Leaf Thief, and collecting autumnal items outdoors. In RE, they learned about God’s creations, made binoculars, and went outside to spot the many wonderful gifts from God.
Key Stage One
Year 1 and 2 have been working hard this week in science on their observation and prediction skills. The class have been observing the weather each day and comparing it to the forecast that we checked before starting. They found that the forecast was mostly correct, but not always! They have been fascinated by their observations of a pine cone in water, learning that they close up in water to protect their fragile seeds. Once taken out of the water, the class observed how long it took to dry out and re-open. It was wonderful to hear the children's discussions and the links they made in their learning. If anyone goes on a walk this weekend, look out for a pine cone so that you can try it for yourself! In music, Mrs Mallinson was very impressed by their singing skills and was wowed to listen to EVERY child in the class perform a solo in front of everyone. This can be daunting at any age, so this was so lovely to see. Well done, KS1! In computing, the class enjoyed learning how to log in and out of a computer and use a browser to find our learning platform, Purple Mash. The children enjoyed working together to explore the site and managed to find some games to play!
Lower Key Stage Two
Year 3 and Year 4 have continued to work hard this week and have really enjoyed their learning. In science, the children named and described the functions of components used in simple series circuits. They had to build different circuits and describe whether they were 'complete' or 'incomplete' using appropriate scientific vocabulary. In art, the children looked at different grades of pencils and how these can be used to show light and dark tones using shading. They were then tasked with using this technique to make their drawings look three-dimensional. In maths, the children looked at using Base 10, counters on place-value charts and part-whole models to make and partition numbers up to 10,000. Mr Tasker has been very impressed with their efforts and confidence to share their knowledge and understanding. In computing, the class developed their understanding of staying safe on the Internet by looking at malware and the impact it can have on computer networks. Next week, the class will look at Stourport in a bit more detail and learn about the origins of the canals and the development of the basin.
Year 5
The children have really impressed Miss Homsin by working super hard this week. Today the children have completed a fantastic Star Write retell based on The Emperor's New Clothes. In Science, the children carried out their investigation on finding the best thermal insulator. Year 5 have has some lovely discussions about what materials they would like to test in the future. In art the children looked at developing their 'Poem Portraits', mastering continuous line drawing and how to use this technique to create tone and texture. The children have carried on developing their teamwork skills in tag rugby with Miss Gillum. The children have worked extra hard in Maths, focusing on partitioning numbers to 1,000,000! Year 5 finished of this week of Maths by looking at Number lines to 1,000,000. Well done Year 5!
Year 6
After a busy week in Year 6 it is always lovely to reflect on everything that the children have achieved, and this week is no exception. The children have really impressed Miss McGowan today by writing a fabulous Star Write based on The Crow’s Tale. In Science, the children have continued to learn about light, this week thinking about how light travels and comparing this to how sound travels. Year 6 have also been incredible artists this week and looked at a piece of artwork by Diego Rivera who was inspired by ancient Mayan art. The children then used Mayan art to explore and develop their own ideas using a range of artists techniques and tools. In PE, the children combined their maths skills with orienteering to complete a place value scavenger hunt. The teamwork demonstrated was excellent and the teams also used some wonderful problem-solving skills. Next week, the children will be delving into a new text and will continue their journeys as fabulous writers! Well done for a super week Year 6.
