Message from Mrs Brocklesby

ENHANCING SAFETY IN OUR SCHOOL

At Saint Wulstan's School, we take safeguarding and safety very seriously. It is important that we continue to review all our procedures, taking into account even those events that are very unlikely to occur. As part of this process, we have a procedure called “lockdown” We will be practising this procedure on Thursday 8th February.
A lockdown procedure is a standard health and safety procedure, similar to a fire drill. Our lockdown procedure would be used when there is a threat to the safety of pupils, staff and others in the school, and when it is safer for everyone to remain in school than evacuate. All children will be kept safe by confining them to a secure place of safety. Before the lockdown I will deliver an assembly to explain the procedure clearly and at an age-appropriate level. If you would like to discuss this, please contact the school office or email ebrocklesby@emmausmac.com

Please pop into school on Thursday at 9.15 am to show your support for the school PTA. If you can't make it please don't worry as following on from feedback received there will also be a zoom meeting for parents after half term. This meeting will be in the evening and details will be shared next week

Weekly Round Up From Mrs Warnett

Reception

This week the children in Reception have shown a keen interest in birds after spotting some birds in the outdoor area. In class, the children have been talking about how different animals survive in the winter and this led to a child asking how birds get the worms from the ground when it is frosty. The children discussed ways that they could help the birds and suggested putting food out for them. This led to the children creating bird feeders. The children are hoping that this will encourage more birds to come and visit the outdoor area as they are keeping a record of the different birds they have spotted so far.

KS1 have had a busy week, in English they have been using the book VLAD to find our all about the Great Fire of London, this linked in well with their History topic and this week they have begun to order the events of the Great Fire of London.  Today they were joined by Father Richard as we celebrated Mass, the children did exceptionally well with their readings and we would like to thanks those that joined us.

Year 3

It’s been another busy week in Year 3. In geography the children have been developing their map skills. They were all given a map of the local area and using a key with different map symbols, they had to find different facilities such as camp sites, information centres and nature reserves. Next geography lesson they will be developing their map skills further using four figure grid references to locate different places and facilities. In English they have been writing a diary entry from the viewpoint of Mary Anning, focusing on the day when she discovered the Ichthyosaur fossil. In history, the children have been looking at how early civilisations conducted trade between each other and other civilisations. They learnt that before the invention of money, people would barter for goods and how trading between civilisation helped to spread new ideas and technologies.

Year 4

The children in Year 4 started the week by looking at 'tints and shades' in art. They has to mix black and white to colours to create different tints and shades that could be used to create light and dark areas on a painting. In science, the children investigated volume and how it changes over different distances. They confidently explained their findings and are becoming increasingly more accurate with their predictions and evaluations. It was the children's last swimming lesson today and they were very excited to wear the pyjamas in the pool. Part of their swimming curriculum is to perform self-rescue skills with confidence and recognise how to stay safe around water. They did an excellent job and understood the importance of these skills while still having fun. Well done!

Year 5

This week, Year 5 had their final visit from Mr Mallinson before their big performance at Birmingham Symphony Hall. We are all so proud of them for all of the hard work they have put into this performance since September and have no doubt that they will represent St Wulstan’s in the very best way. It was lovely for the children to receive some advice from Year 6 and we know everyone will thinking of them on Monday night! Break a leg, Year 5! The children have also been very busy developing their knowledge of fractions and continuing to become tea experts! In art, they have also started to explore retrofuturism and look forward to creating their own artworks after half term.

Year 6

This term, in Geography, the Year 6 children have been learning about the UK coast and how the coastline has been constantly changing shape through coastal erosion. The children are learning about the impacts of a changing coastline and in particular how it can affect flood risk. They can now explain what erosion is, where it occurs, different types of erosion and how humans cause erosion. In Design and Technology, the children have designed their playground and built the structures using different techniques. They have explained how the structures can be structured and manipulated. The children are looking forward to showing their playgrounds to family and friends.

SAFER INTERNET DAY - Tuesday 6 February

Next Tuesday we will be taking part in 'Together for a better internet'. Safer Internet Day takes place in February of each year to raise awareness of a safer and better internet for all, and especially for children and young people.
