Message From Mrs Brocklesby

Two full weeks into term and already the school schedule is a busy one, with clubs up and running, musical praise, class liturgies, coffee mornings, retreats and assemblies in full swing. Added to this the imminence of parents evenings (dates to be shared shortly) and an open morning for new parents on Thursday 19th October 9.30-11.30 am.

Every year we have a School Development Plan which enables us to work on many aspects of school life, as a whole school community. This year we shall be having a great emphasis on our curriculum. Staff have sequenced a curriculum, which is implemented through classroom teaching enabling pupils to know more and do more. This year we will be inviting you to curriculum workshops. At your son or daughter's curriculum workshop you will find out how they will develop the knowledge and skills to succeed in every subject.

I just wanted to thank everyone for your support in my new role and share the best ways to discuss any day to day school matters with staff. Firstly either catch myself or Mrs Warnett on the gate or email enquiry_wul@emmausmac.com Your email will be directed to Mrs Warnett who will deal with day to day matters.

Weekly Round Up From Mrs Warnett

October is Dwarfism Awareness Month - a month-long event to spread awareness and increase the visibility of dwarfism and people with the condition. This event aims to educate people on dwarfism while dispelling myths and misconceptions. Dwarfism Awareness Month is observed internationally and also aims to offer opportunities to people with dwarfism. There are many ways to observe Dwarfism Awareness Month, but one of the most valuable ways we can do this is by educating ourselves, and others, about dwarfism. Another way is to raise money for charities and organisations that are dedicated to increasing awareness, offering services and generally supporting people with dwarfism. This year, in order to raise awareness and raise money for charity, we will be having a non-uniform day on Wednesday 25 October. Children will be invited to come to school in either their own clothes or wear green clothes/accessories (green is the official colour for this event) in return for donating £1. We will begin the week by having a whole school assembly on Monday 23 October and also come together on Wednesday 25 October in the hall for a further opportunity to learn and educate ourselves. This week Reception Class have started 'Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle'. This programme uses neurological and physiological movements to create marks and support the children's writing development. The class have had lots of fun dancing to different music!

Key Stage 1 have been busy this week! In Science they have been exploring their senses, and the children carried out some investigations to find out if everyone has the same number of taste buds and if they need both of their eyes to throw accurately. In Art they have been looking at primary and secondary colours and learning about colour mixing. In Music they have been using percussion instruments to respond to classical music and in PE they have been playing Dodgeball.

In Year 3 this week in PE, the children have been developing their teamwork skills. They have thoroughly enjoyed this and are already displaying excellent decision making and communication skills. They are also very proud of one of their class members, Eliana-Hope, who has raised over £200 for WaterAid, by holding a movie night and a bake sale. What a fantastic way to live out our school Virtues and Values. Well done!

The children in Year 4 have continued their hard work and effort this week, with many house points and stickers handed out to celebrate this. They have started looking at rivers and the water cycle in Geography and in History they have looked at the terms 'invade' and 'settle'. The adults have also been impressed by the enthusiasm and confidence shown by the children in French lessons. Keep up the great work!

In Year 5 this week the children have begun to investigate what historians do and consider how they find out about the past. They have also continued to find out about forces and this week have been looking at how surface area affects air resistance. Miss McGowan says Class Liturgy was also lovely this week as the children were thinking about friendship and gave compliments to each other. It was a thoughtful and reflective Liturgy and was a lovely way to start the day.

For many years Year 6 have been going to Alton Castle for a spiritual retreat. A number of youth leaders provide the children with activities and open their eyes to the beauty of God's world. The children had a fantastic time taking part in many activities: trekking, cycling, survival course, low ropes and night line. Their souls were nourished through Mass and prayer while friendships were strengthened, and their faith deepened. Thank you to Mrs Freitas, Mrs Morgan and Miss Morgan for accompanying the children on the residential. A special thank you to all the staff at Alton Castle. The children and staff had a wonderful time!

Catholic Life and Faith In Action

This week has seen the announcement of our new team of Mini Vinnies. Well done to all of the children who have applied and been successful - we are looking forward to seeing all of the wonderful ways in which you will help to serve others.

A reminder that the first Mini Vinnie event of the year will be a Pyjama Day on Friday 29 September. All children will be able to attend school in their pyjamas in exchange for a £1 donation. Children are welcome to wear their slippers while in school that day but will need shoes for play times.

Also on Friday 29 September, we will be holding a Macmillan Coffee afternoon at 2:45pm - all of our families are invited to attend in the school hall and we would be grateful for any donations in exchange for a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake!

If you require an application form in order to receive support from the St Vincent de Paul Society for purchasing uniform or school shoes, please either click the button below or ask for a paper copy from the school office. All such requests for forms would be treated with strict confidentiality.
