Message from Mrs Brocklesby -

Over the weekend please visit our School Facebook page.

We use it as a way to reach all families and friends of Saint Wulstan's School. It is a place to keep up to date with the school’s news and find out more about recent events. After all, it’s called a ‘social’ media platform for a reason – it’s about people, engagement and building community. All things that are at the heart of Saint Wulstan's School especially our trolley for the Three Kings Parade. Visit our Facebook page to see it!
Thank you to our School Council and Mrs Tasker for designing and creating such a beautiful trolley for tonight’s Three Kings Parade. All of the children in school contributed by making a sparkly snowflake for the trolley too! We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible tonight! We will be meeting in the Civic Centre car park at 5:45PM. Children must be accompanied by an adult. ❄️

This week to develop our understanding of the work of ‘Aid to the Church in Need’ (ACN) we supported the ‘Red Wednesday’ campaign. Everyone in school wore a red ribbon to show support of persecuted Christians throughout the world. Please visit our school Facebook Page to see how our school community came together in solidarity and prayer for all those around the world who are persecuted for their faith.

Reception/Year 1 - The children in Reception have been learning about Diwali this week. They have enjoyed listening to the story of Rama and Sita and have created some fabulous drawings during our drawing club sessions. The children have enjoyed creating their own rangoli patterns using buttons and rice, designing and creating Mehindi patterns and taking part in a Diwali dance. A highlight of the week was making their own Diya lamps out of clay; they are excited to bring them home and put a candle in. It has been a lovely week in Reception and the children have really enjoyed finding out about a different celebration. The children in Year 1 having been working hard this week. They have almost completed their windmills in their Design and Technology lessons. This week was a challenging week where children had to attach their sails to their structure. It took lots of patience and perseverance to do this and the staff were really pleased with how well they approached the task. The children have also been working hard in their computing lessons. They can talk to you about the importance of being safe online and know ways to keep themselves safe. The children have been enjoying using Purple Mash for different activities and were very excited to take home their log in details so they can access it at home too.

Year 2 and 3 have had a lovely, wintery week! They have enjoyed making snowflakes for the trolley for the Three Kings' Parade and tried very hard to cut out neat, detailed shapes. They have been excited to see them on the trolley, ready for the parade! Of course, there was great excitement on Tuesday as we awoke to snow! We braved the cold to enjoy a magical walk outside. In English, the children have been enthralled by The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and know some fascinating facts about red squirrels. Ask them for an interesting fact! The children have now moved on to learning about the difference between the past and present tense in their writing. They were interested to find that Beatrix Potter wrote some of the story in the present tense because Owl Island in the story is a real island that you can still visit nowadays in the Lake District! The children have continued to learn about Bournville in history and geography and have prepared some interesting questions, ready for our upcoming trip to Cadbury World!

Year 4

Year 4 have continued learning about rivers this week in their geography lessons, looking at the features of the lower course of a river and recognising how they support life as they come to the end of their journey. In history, the children looked at the Roman army and developed their understanding of weapons, tactics and training. The children recognised why the Roman army were so good at fighting and successful in battles. In maths, the children have been developing their understanding of area and how to calculate the area of 2-D shapes. The children enjoyed getting creative by making their own shapes measuring different areas. The children have been working really hard in their swimming lessons and are making great progress. Many children are confident in the water and are using different strokes to get closer to completing a length in the pool, others are continuing to challenge themselves to become more competent moving in and under the water. Finally, in science the children have been observing changes in materials that turn from a solid to a liquid. They had lots to say about the changes when materials are heated and have lots of questions to discuss in our next lesson.

Year 5

This morning, Year 5 led Mass for Year 2/3 and for their grown ups. Mrs Tasker said that they did a wonderful job and were fantastic role models. In History, Year 5 have been finding out about how the Anglo-Saxon and Viking period ended. The children could not believe the number of Monarchs and battles and loved the drama and ups and downs of the period! In maths, Year 5 have started to investigate fractions – another time where the children have been reminded that knowing their times tables will make their understanding much easier! In English, the children have been planning writing a formal letter in the role of Mary Jackson. The children have been really engaged in their class text, Hidden Figures and Miss McGowan is very much looking forward to reading their completed letters. As Scientists, Year 5 have continued exploring the planets and have even been writing clues about planets and their properties to test Miss McGowan’s knowledge. Very impressive Year 5, keep up the super work! Next week, the children should look forward to continuing with their 'explosive' art and beginning to consider other ways of creating fantastic art installations.

Year 6

This week has been another busy one! In R.E., the children began a new unit focusing on the lives of Jesus' disciples. Through this, they are learning about the challenges and demands the call of Christ placed on these first followers. In Maths, they have been working on ordering and comparing fractions, which can be tricky when the fractions have different denominators. In Geography, the children explored how climate change has occurred naturally over millions of years. In English, they wrote their first newspaper report, inspired by our class text The Explorer, about an aircraft that disappeared in the Amazon Rainforest. In Science, the children studied variation within species, exploring how individuals of the same species can have different characteristics. They looked at factors that influence these variations, such as genetics and environmental conditions. Through hands-on activities, the children examined physical traits like eye colour in our class and presented the data in their Science books. To wrap up the week, the children took part in a Basketball morning at Stourport High School. The children did very well at the basketball tournament, demonstrating great teamwork, skill and sportsmanship. They played with enthusiasm and determination, supporting each other throughout the matches. A special thank you to Mr Tasker for organising this sporting opportunity and for accompanying the children to the event.

Year 5 Mass
This week Year 5 celebrated Mass and the theme was 'I will Take Care of You.' During the homily, Fr. Richard reminded us of God's unwavering love. He also reminded us that we must trust in God's plan, knowing that He provides for our needs and supports us through life's challenges.
A special thank you to the children for reading and leading the Mass beautifully today. The children's voices brought reverence to the celebration. It is wonderful to witness the children's faith and commitment. Thank you to Fr Richard for celebrating Mass with us today and a special thank you to Miss McGowan for preparing the children so well.

Reconciliation in Preparation for Advent
As part of our Advent preparation, Key Stage 2 children are being given the opportunity to receive Reconciliation. This sacred moment allows the children to experience God's mercy and forgiveness, helping them to grow in faith. It is a beautiful way for the children to prepare their hearts for the joy and peace of the Christmas season and we thank Fr Richard for supporting the children in this important spiritual journey.
