Message from Mrs Brocklesby
The highlight of the week for our children has been the ‘Inflatable Fun Day.’ The day was organised by Mrs Freitas to celebrate the Feast of Saint Wulstan, mark the start of the Year of Jubilee 2025 and thank everyone for their continued hard work. This was evident last week during our Catholic Schools Inspection.
The children had a great time on the bouncy castle as well as driving the wiggle cars around the hall.
Message from Mrs Warnett
Reception and Year 1
It's been a busy week as our Reception and Year 1 class have taken part in their Balanceability programme that helps children learn to ride safely and confidently. The children took part in several activities over three sessions that were designed to develop confidence and skills that will assist them with their cycling development and prepare them to participate in Bikeability in Year 4 and Year 5. We were so impressed with their enthusiasm, concentration and general skills throughout the sessions, with staff receiving wonderful feedback from the instructors about the children. Well done everyone!
Year 2 and 3
Year 2 and 3 have had a super week! They have been developing their fieldwork skills around the school site with Mr Dudley, working hard to make careful observations. In maths, the children really enjoyed finishing off their unit of work on shape by building 3D shapes using spaghetti and plasticine. The children were quick to notice why they couldn't make shapes with curved edges, such as cylinders. The class worked hard in teams to create cubes, cuboids, square based pyramids and triangular prisms. As the structures were so fragile, they had to cooperate in their groups to ensure their shapes didn't fall apart! In DT, the children started a new unit, in which they will be developing their understanding of structures to build a castle. The children's knowledge of structures and shapes will be a great help to them in the coming weeks as they work towards creating strong and stable structures. The children were delighted to end the week with their St Wulstan's Day celebration on the bouncy castle and bikes. Well-deserved fun after such a busy week!
Year 4
Year 4 have had a really positive week and have worked hard in all areas of the curriculum. In PE, the children have continued to develop their motifs to the Roman themed dance and it has been really wonderful to see their creativity, control and timings develop over the past few weeks. In English, the children have been using similes in their writing to add extra detail. There have been some brilliant sentences composed using our class test 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' as a stimulus and the children have enjoyed sharing their writing with their peers. Yesterday, the class carried some market research for their first Design and Technology recipe and spent the afternoon taste testing biscuits, describing packaging and looking at the target audiences. The children will now create a basic biscuit and add further ingredients before designing packaging over the coming weeks. Finally, the children celebrated the launch of the Holy Year of Jubilee today with the focus being on 'Pilgrims of Hope' and continued the St Wulstan's Feast celebrations by playing on a bouncy castle and racing on the wiggle cars. Much fun was had by all. Well done, Year 4!
Year 5
It’s been yet another busy week in Year 5! The children have continued to develop their dance, this week thinking about their own motifs that could represent superpowers. The children then performed these motifs to each other to see if they had communicated their superpowers effectively! In Gymnastics, Year 5 had a go at leapfrog! It was a challenge, but the children worked really sensibly to then add an element of leapfrog to a short sequence that also included rolls, over and under and a clear start and finish. In History, the children began to learn about Ancient Greece, ensuring that they knew how to locate Greece and considered what time in history that the civilisation started and ended. The children have also started located mountains of the world and their heights. Today was a lovely way to end the week, starting with a MAC livestream to celebrate the launch of the Holy Year of Jubilee and the children also celebrated the feast day of St Wulstan.
Year 6
This week has been very busy. The children began the week by closely examining the images depicted in the Magnificat prayer, a powerful hymn of praise that celebrates the greatness of God. Additionally, the children were invited to share their thoughts on how the themes of hope and salvation found in the prayer could inspire them in their daily lives. In maths, the children have begun to strengthen their understanding of decimal numbers. They have explored the values of digits within decimal numbers and have practised partitioning them in various ways. In Science, the children have been introduced to a new unit: electricity. The children explored both complete and incomplete circuits, investigating the reasons why a circuit may be incomplete. They also learned to use the term "current" to explain why a circuit is functioning or not, and why certain components may or may not work. In History, the children identified where and when the first civilisations began. In History, the children explored the origins of the first civilisations, identifying both the locations and periods in which they began. They located these early civilisations on a map, gaining a visual understanding of where they emerged, such as Ancient Sumer, Ancient Egypt, the Indus Valley, and Shang Dynasty. The children also created their timelines which helped them to understand the chronological order of historical milestones and the connections between different cultures. Today, Year 6 took part in the Year of Jubliee launch organised by the Birmingham Diocese. Just like pilgrims on a journey, the children are going to be 'Pilgrims of Hope' here at St Wulstan's and embrace this opportunity just as Pope Francis encourages all to be. The children also had great fun on the indoor bouncy castle. Thank you for working really hard, Year 6!
