The whole school gathered today for Mass to celebrate the feast of Saint Vincent de Paul, beautifully led by the Minnie Vinnie's. It was so lovely to see so many parents joining as Father Richard celebrated this special occasion. The Minnie Vinnies will be leading a range of charitable activities this year, helping our children make a positive impact in the community.

Message from Mrs Warnett

We are pleased to let you know that bookings for Parents’ Evening are now open on Arbor. This is a valuable opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher to discuss their progress, celebrate achievements, and talk about how we can work together to support their learning.

Appointments will take place in the school hall on Thursday 23 October and Monday 3 November, between 3:50pm and 6:00pm. If you are unable to attend in person and would prefer an online meeting via Teams, please contact Mrs Brown in the school office who will be happy to help arrange this. The email address is enquiry_wul@emmausmac.com.

Reception

This week Reception Class have been very busy. They have been learning about numbers 2,3 and 4 and exploring how they can make these numbers. The children have also spent a lot of time in the craft area. They have experimented with colour mixing and have made owls out of craft resources. In PE the children have continued to develop their team work skills in addition to strengthening their gross and fine motor skills. They enjoyed racing to pick up items with pegs and then working together to build the tallest tower. Well done Reception Class!

Key Stage 1

In English, the class have been reading 'Peace at Last' and exploring letter formation and sentence openers. It is lovely to see how carefully the children write and how keen they are to write. Well done! In science, the children have been exploring a 'big question', 'Do trees with bigger leaves lose them more quickly in autumn than trees with smaller leaves?'. The class made careful observations of the trees on the site and have chosen four to focus on and monitor in their investigation over the coming weeks. In history, the class learnt about motte and bailey castles and worked hard to remember the name and purpose of the different features. In maths, the children have been comparing numbers and using mathematical vocabulary such as 'greater than' and 'less than' to discuss and compare numbers. In PSHE, the children have been discussing what makes each one of them unique and special. The children have enjoyed choosing their first two 'Star Pupils' to shine and be noticed for their uniqueness this week. The raffle ticket box was overflowing by the end of the week, which is testament to how hard the class have worked and how many children have made it to silver on the Zone Board. Well done!

Year 3/4

Year 3 and Year 4 have enjoyed learning about the origins of Stourport this week and how the creation of the canal basins in town developed the surrounding area. The children had lots of questions about the old images of Lower Mitton before, during and after the developments of the basin, with many sharing there knowledge of the area and Bewdley. In science, the children investigated 'conductors' and 'insulators' and were tasked with seeing which materials could be grouped into these headings. Many children were pleased to see that their predictions of metals being the best conductors came through in the results. In PE, the children are continuing to develop their teamwork, resilience and cooperation skills by completing tasks in teams. Each week the children are encouraged to support each other and complete challenges even when things don't go to plan. Mr Tasker has been pleased by the increased number of children that have been demonstrating these skills and behaviours.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been busy with a wide range of exciting learning. In maths, they have been rounding numbers within 1,000,000 and showing great confidence with their place value skills. In English, the class enjoyed exploring the book The Chocolate Tree, focusing on ambitious vocabulary and conjunctions, before completing some fabulous Star Writes to showcase their progress. In history, Year 5 discovered more about different Mayan gods and explored the beliefs of the Mayan religion. In RE, they reflected on their own gifts and talents, considering how they can use these to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. To finish the week, in computing the children had great fun developing and coding their very own ‘catching game’, putting their problem-solving and creativity to the test. Good work Year 5!

Year 6

This week, Year 6 have been working hard developing their descriptive language to write a setting description base din Victorian London, inspired by the book Street Child. They have sued the power of 3, a range of adverbial phrases and have explored the use of figurative language with some impressive results. In PE, the children were honing their orienteering skills by following maps for a netball orienteering challenge. As artists, the children have continued being inspired by Mayan art and created a coloured tile using a symbol for a Mayan spirit companion which thy felt best represented them. In science, the children investigated how light is reflected and drew the angle at which light hits an object and the angle that it is reflected and noticed a relationship between the two. As Historians, they have discussed the importance of coal and iron within the Industrial Revolution and have begun to explore how the Black Country got its name. Next week, the children will continue looking at the story of Street Child and will write a retell of Jim buying a very special pie for him and his family.

Reminder - next Friday is an INSET Day. School is open to staff only.

On Thursday 17 October, we will be supporting Dwarfism Awareness Month. Children are invited to come to school wearing green clothing to show their support. We kindly ask for a £1 donation, which will go directly to Little People UK, a charity that provides support, advice, and information to people with dwarfism and their families.  Moving forward, any payment items for school will now be on Arbor and not Parentpay (excluding current payment items eg Kidderminster Harriers this term and the Year 5 residential trip next year).  Any kind donations of £1 towards the Dwarfism Awareness Month can be made via your Arbor account - this is the new way for paying for school related items instead of Parentpay.

To raise money for an exciting opportunity for the Reception class, later in the year, the Reception children have come up with an idea of having a scarecrow competition.  To raise as much money as possible, the competition is open to all the children at St Wulstan’s with an entry fee of £1.

The scarecrows can be any size and made from any material.  The entries will be displayed on the grassy bank by the school’s main foyer, for everyone to enjoy.

The closing date for entries will be Monday 20 October.  The winning entry will be announced in school that week, with a prize for the winner.

There is a local scarecrow festival at Pattingham Village (7 miles west of Wolverhampton) from 26-28 September, if you would like to have a family day out and get some inspiration. (The popular Belbroughton scarecrow festival isn’t running this year).

We look forward to seeing your imaginative creations!

If your child is in their final year at primary school, you need to apply for their secondary school place.  The closing date is 31 October 2025.  Visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk/schooladmissions

If your child is due to start school in September 2026 (and was born between 1 September 2021-31 August 2022) the closing date for applying for a place is 15 January 2026. Visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk/schooladmissions
