Message from Mrs Brocklesby

NATIONAL ATTENDANCE CAMPAIGN

This year the government have launched a new national campaign to remind parents and carers of the importance of school attendance. You will be seeing it on tv, social media and hearing about it on the radio.

The NHS and the Chief Medical Officer say it is usually appropriate for parents and carers to send their children to school with mild respiratory illnesses, including general cold symptoms like a minor cough, runny nose or sore throat. Please refer to the following link for further information https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill- for-school/

From the first day of term to the last, the small moments in a school day make a real difference to your child. #AttendanceCounts so please ensure your child attends school regularly.

If you have any concerns about your child's attendance, please get in touch.

PTA

This term our aim is to bring together staff, parents and friends socially to fundraise for our school. Our primary aim will be to support the school to enhance the educational experience of our children. We need your links to gain more support from the local community, especially small and large businesses, as well as parents who have their own businesses.

Please email ebrocklesby@emmausmac.com if your business can support us or if you know a way we can source support from local businesses.

Being part of our PTA will be great fun, and rewarding seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they are enjoying themselves at events.

There are always small tasks that can be done from home once the children are in school or in bed, e.g. poster designs, social media enhancement, preparing raffle tickets, and plenty more. All help small or big makes a huge difference to the bigger picture. It would be wonderful to get parents involved even if it is only helping out at events on the day for whatever time you can spare.

Please check your emails as a flyer with details for our first meeting has been sent this week.

St Wulstan's Non-Uniform Day.  Last Friday we celebrated St Wulstan's Day and in the process raised £104.05.  Thank you for your kind donations.   This money was used to fund a mosaic workshop which every child took part in on the day.   The beautiful mosaic, which depicts St Wulstan's mitre, will be displayed in the school's entrance way.

Weekly Round Up From Mrs Warnett

Reception Class have recently started a new activity called 'Drawing Club' and it is quickly becoming one of the most exciting parts of their day. Across the week the children are immersing themselves into a story, developing wonderful vocabulary and using their imaginations to mark make, write and build an adventure for the characters of the story. Each day the staff look forward to discovering what new ideas the children have for their next adventure!

KS1

Key Stage 1 have had a busy week this week! As part of multi-cultural week, they have been learning all about Judaism. In English they have just finished working on the ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’ and are excited to start their new book! In Geography they have been using globes and atlases to locate the capital cities of the countries of the United Kingdom. In Art they have been refining their sculpting skills and created pinch pots and have learnt how to join clay to decorate their pots.

Year 3

Year 3 have had another busy week. In RE they have been learning about the Jewish festivals of Passover, Sukkot and Purim. The children have really enjoyed learning about these different festivals and have been making links between these festivals and others that they have studied. The children have started their new DT topic, wearable technology. They have been looking at different types of wearable technology and have been evaluating their usefulness.

Year 3 have also really enjoyed their new class text this week. They have been looking at the book ‘Stone Girl, Bone Girl’ by Laurence Anholt.  Before they wrote their star write for part of this story, the children were learning how to use short sentences for effect in their writing. They all did a super job. Well done Year 3!

Year 4

It has been a really productive week of learning in Year 4 this week and the children have had lots of opportunities to share their creativity and understanding in lessons. In PE, the children have been developing their dance skills and have created patterns of movements to the them of 'Like a Roman'. They have been working individually and in pairs with the dance developing really well. The children really enjoyed the 'Words and Waffles' morning on Wednesday and are very grateful of their adults' time. They then used their discussion points from this session and from reading of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to support their creative writing in English. In geography, the children are showing a growing understanding of where their food comes from and have been able to explain in details the journey of food from temperate climate zones around the world. The children have also really enjoyed learning about Judaism in 'Multicultural Week' and have been able to explain the importance of Jacob and Joseph to this faith. Well done Year 4!

Year 5

It’s been another busy week in Year 5! The children have been developing their skills as geographers and have been investigating mountain regions from around the world. They were all tasked with choosing a mountain and then considering enquiry questions that would help them find out more about that specific location. The children came up with some wonderful questions that would inform them about everything from elevation to leisure and tourism of a mountainous region. Year 5 have also been inspired by their class text, ‘Cloud Tea Monkeys’ to write a guide to the art of tea tasting! They did a wonderful job of this and were able to select and use fantastic verbs that left the reader with no doubt what was required of them to be a professional tea taster! Year 5 have also really enjoyed finding out about Judaism during the week and have been amazing at making links between aspects of this faith and others that they have studied. Well done Year 5!

Year 6

This week the Year 6 children have been learning about a young Arctic fox that shocked scientists with a long-distance record. Just shy of a year old, the female fox walked all the way from Norway to Canada in just 76 days. Her journey is among the longest ever recorded for her species, according to researchers. As part of Multi-Cultural week, the children have identified the significance of the synagogue in Jewish worship and the importance of The Torah in guiding daily lives. They have also identified key teachings from The Torah, including ethical principles and have taken part in discussions on how these teachings shape Jewish values and practices.

School Council Lunch Club - Thursdays

Our school councillors have requested a lunchtime club where children can take part in several indoor activities. They include: arts and crafts, turn taking games, group discussions, sharing music and video clips. The purpose of this club is give the children an opportunity to develop interaction, make decisions, solve problems, develop teamwork, develop coordination and broaden their experiences in their personal areas of interest and socialise with friends whilst having fun. A special thank you to Miss McGowan for donating the board games.

21 January - World Religion Day

Every year we celebrate Multi-Cultural Week and this year we focused on Judaism. The children have been learning about the Jewish faith and its beliefs, practices and customs. They also had the opportunity to identify how we as Christians have things in common with those of other faiths and religions. Learning about other faiths is so important as it links with our British Values of tolerance and mutual respect.
