Message From Mrs Brocklesby

I am delighted  to announce that we are taking part in the LiveSimply award from CAFOD.

The LiveSimply award is earned by communities and schools who can show how they have been living:

  • simply
  • in solidarity with people in poverty
  • sustainably with creation.

The LiveSimply award is an opportunity for our Catholic community to respond to Pope Francis’ invitation in Laudato Si' to “work with generosity and tenderness in protecting this world which God has entrusted to us”

The award celebrates what we have already done and inspires us to do more. It helps our community to live, not just more simply, but also more fully. On Monday Mrs Freitas led a creation assembly inspiring all children to write a creation pledge to live simply. During the season of creation the children will also write thanksgiving prayers for God's beautiful world.

Next Thursday 5th October is census day. Census day is an important day for schools as it helps to determine our funding for next year. Please help us by having a school lunch on Thursday. There is an exciting Super Hero lunch menu, see below. The number of meals we serve on Thursday will impact our funding next year. Remember, all children in Year R, 1 and 2 receive free lunches every day. Therefore, it would be great to see as many school lunches ordered as possible, thank you for your support.

Weekly Round Up From Mrs Warnett

It has been another busy week and one that marks the halfway point through our first half term at school. On Tuesday, we welcomed Emily Jordan from One Life Music. She spent a whole day with the school, teaching children some wonderful new hymns that we are keen to keep practising and will soon start singing during Masses and liturgies. It was wonderful to hear the children singing so beautifully and I was treated to a brilliant performance at the end of the day - well done children! Thank you to Mrs Mallinson for joining us and for accompanying Emily throughout the day.

After half term, children will be required to wear winter uniform. Please see our Policies and Documents page for our latest Uniform Policy. We do have a collection of pre-loved uniform in school and we also have the support of our local St Vincent de Paul Society - please see below for details.

There have been some changes to Mass dates - please see the diary dates section below for most up to date information. Please also remember that school is closed to pupils for an INSET day on Friday 6 October.

This week Reception Class have started their phonics lessons. The children have enjoyed learning some new sounds and having a go at practising forming them during their time in continuous provision. The class have been painting, using the outdoor chalk boards and writing in glitter. The staff have been so pleased with how the children have been leading their own learning with this.

This week, KS1 have worked their socks off! They've been writing about The Gingerbread man and focusing on some tricky split-digraphs. In Maths, they have looked at 1 more and 1 less of a given number and have been comparing amounts. In PE, the children have focused on the key skill of jumping, looking at what they need to do to ensure the safety of themselves and others when jumping before participating in a fun, pirate and mermaid themed jumping game!  In Computing, they have started to learn to log in and use the search functions - some children found this tricky but they all persevered and achieved the expected outcome. Well done children!

Mr Whitcombe says it’s been another fantastic week in Year 3. This week the children have been looking at the where different types of extreme weather occur around the world. They are really enjoying this topic and have produced some fantastic ideas.

Year 4 have enjoyed another great week. In music, the children explored the words 'texture' and 'structure' while listening to rain sounds through body percussion. They have recapped shading in their art lessons and used it to explore 3D pencil drawings using ribbon.

It has been another busy week in Year 5 and the children have been continuing to start new topics within their learning. This week, Year 5 started planning a DT project to design and make a pop-up book as well as beginning to deepen their knowledge of the UK in Geography. In their PE sessions, the children have been developing their teamwork skills with a focus on trust and communication. The children worked incredibly well together and it was wonderful to see them complete this task so successfully.

This week the Year 6 children were invited to attend the MAC Sports afternoon at Hagley Catholic High School. All children were great sports ambassadors displaying a good attitude towards learning and playing the different sports (football, bench ball and trampolining). They all actively engaged and were inspiring team members. Well done, Year 6!

Librarians

Congratulations to all the children who have been selected to take on the role of St Wulstan's librarians. The children are all very enthusiastic. They have received their training from Mrs Tasker and they will now be able to support and help their friends with books from the school library. The library will be up and running from Monday!

Today we saw our first Mini Vinnies events being held - Pyjama Day and a Macmillan Coffee afternoon. The Mini Vinnies have chosen the charity 'The Children's Family Trust' who have been supporting foster families since 1945. They look out for the welfare of vulnerable children and young people to ensure they are kept safe and placed in a loving, stable foster home. All the money raised with Macmillan Coffee Afternoon will be to support people living with cancer.

Thank you so much to our children and families for joining in with these events and for your generous donations.

Please watch this space for future Mini Vinnies event information!

If you require an application form in order to receive support from the St Vincent de Paul Society for purchasing uniform or school shoes, please either click the button below or ask for a paper copy from the school office. All such requests for forms would be treated with strict confidentiality.
