Message from Mrs Brocklesby -

This weekend many of our children will be attending a Remembrance Sunday parade as part of their Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows, Brownies, Girl's Brigade or another similar group to mark Remembrance Day. If your son or daughter attends a parade, please send in a photograph of them in their uniform, if you are happy for us to share it on our newsletter next week. Send photographs to ebrocklesby@emmausmac.com

Today Father Richard celebrated Mass with Years 2 and 3. The theme of Mass was prayer and it was wonderful to hear the children say, prayer is a way we can talk to God. I would like to thank Mrs Tasker, Mrs Morgan and all the children for preparing the Mass and reading so confidently and clearly. Both Father and I were really impressed with how reverent all the children were. Thank you to the parents and family members who attended Mass today.

Anti-Bullying Week

Next week in school is Anti-Bullying Week and the theme this year is ‘Choose Respect’. All children will take part in a range of activities to empower them to treat everyone with respect online and offline, even when we disagree.  As adults we can support our children continuing to lead by example, online and offline. Thank you for your support.

Mrs Warnett's round up

This week in PE, Reception Class and Year 1 have started their Dance Unit. The theme of the dance is 'Pirates' and the children have loved getting into character! The first lesson required the class to think of words that they associate with pirates and then to create movements that display these ideas. The children will spend their PE lessons putting some of these movements together into a routine. It has been wonderful to see the creativity in the children's movements so far and everybody is looking forward to seeing the dance come together this term.

Year 2 and 3 have been learning about Remembrance Day and have created some beautiful artwork, of which they were very proud! The children have enjoyed creating their final healthy wrap designs in DT and have chosen final products to recommend to a healthy eating charity. Well done! Cheese was a very popular choice, but it was also great to see the children enjoying avocado, boiled egg, tuna and a variety of vegetables. The children have started the first of a series of multi-skills sessions with a coach. They developed their netball skills, learning how to work as a team to pass a ball effectively. The children have also been working on tag rugby, so had to work hard to remember that they couldn't run with the ball, unlike rugby! They are looking forward to their next multi-skills session next week. The children finished the week with their Class Mass. The children showed great maturity and read beautifully. Thank you to those adults who were able to attend as well.

Year 4 have enjoyed paying their respects and developing their understanding of Remembrance Day this week. They have created some lovely pieces of artwork in class and composed some very thoughtful prayers of remembrance. The children really impressed the teachers on Wednesday during the inter-house cross country run. Racing against the Year 5 children, Year 4 showed great confidence and resilience to complete the challenging distance. In science, the children have started their new unit that will focus on states of matter. The children showed a good understanding of solids, liquids and gases and developed their understanding of the properties that are linked to these. In geography, the children looked at the upper course of a river. They did really well explaining the features found in the upper course, using an increased amount of geographical language in their work. The children really enjoyed learning about Boudicca from two Roman sources this afternoon in history. They highlighted some interesting descriptions of Boudicca and the Celts and were able to suggest a general view of them from the descriptions. The children them debated whether these sources give an accurate view of Boudicca and the Celts and suggested what would help them gain a more balanced view. Well done!

Year 5 have started this second half term strong and have worked very hard this week. They were particularly impressive taking part in cross country showing stamina, perseverance and determination. In English, the children have started to look at a new book, Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly. So far, the children have started to investigate the beginnings of NASA and have already started to see how times were very different to how they are now. In maths the children have been thinking about why square and cube numbers are given those names and have been reminded of just how important knowing their times tables is – something Miss McGowan is very keen to tell them! The children have also written their own Remembrance prayers and have drawn beautiful poppies – a very poignant reminder of the sacrifices that were made by many others for us at this time of year. Next week the children are excited about starting to learn about Space in science and finding out more about who or what the Hidden Figures in our book might be!

Year 6 have had a great start to the second half of the term. The week began with a focus on this term’s virtues, where the children explored the importance of being intentional in their daily choices, in their learning, and in their relationships, both at school and at home. In maths, the children delved into the order of operations, learning the key rules for determining which parts of a calculation to solve first. This is an important concept that will support their problem-solving skills moving forward. In History, the children were busy researching the ancient Maya civilisation, focusing on the fascinating city-states and how Maya society was structured. They’ve been exploring how different aspects of the society, from politics to religion, shaped daily life. In Geography, the class continued their study of biomes, this time honing in on the features of the rainforest. The children have been learning about the unique characteristics of this ecosystem and how it supports a wide variety of plant and animal life. Overall, it’s been a productive and engaging week for Year 6. Keep up the good work!
