Message from Mrs Brocklesby

This weekend we celebrate all the Mothers/Maternal figures in our lives and in heaven.

Today we started the celebrations by spoiling Mums with an afternoon tea. Thank you to Mrs Freitas and the Minnie Vinnies for organising such a wonderful event.

Please remember to say Happy Mother's Day. I love you, and I am proud you are a part of my life.

We pray that all our Mothers, Grandmothers and other women who care for children have a blessed Sunday as we celebrate Mother's Day.

Dear Lord,

Bless every mother and every grandmother with the finest of your spiritual blessings today.
Confirm in her heart and spirit the work of her hands and the love that she has so freely given to those children under Your care.

Amen

Weekly Round Up From Mrs Warnett

CAKE SALE: A HUGE thank you to the families of Year 5 and 6 children for your very generous donation of cakes for last week's cake sale and to all families who sent money in to purchase the cakes. In total, we have raised £160.54 which is an amazing start to this year's fundraising! Thank you all!

Reception Class were very excited to dress up for World Book Day and had some wonderful costumes. The children took part in a range of activities including book cover drawing, creating character stick puppets, book jigsaws and decorating bookmarks. The children especially enjoyed their time sharing some of their favourite stories with their Faith Friends in Year 5, and of course the exciting end of the day assembly with the rest of the school when the children in Reception had the chance to show off their fantastic dance moves!

KS1 have been working incredibly hard this week.  In Maths they have been learning about length and height and the importance of accurately measuring objects in centimetres.  In History, they explored the reasons that the Great Fire of London spread so quickly and lasted for so long. In PE, they combined the skills learnt in previous week so created short group sequences which they then preformed. In English they have been writing an non fiction piece on the life cycle of a butterfly and this has caused a real flutter of excitement!

Year 3 have had another brilliant week. In PE they are continuing with their cricket unit. This week the children have been practicing how to hold a bat correctly and play a drive off the front foot. The children are also thoroughly enjoying swimming on Fridays and are making excellent progress. In Science the children have been planning their soils experiment. They have been looking at different soils and will be looking at how much water different soils absorb. Year 3 really got into the spirit of World Book Day and their costumes were all fantastic. Mr Whitcombe and Miss Morgan were very impressed with the range of costumes the children had. Throughout the day the children did reading based activities and gave their own book recommendations to each other. It was an excellent day!

Year 4 have completed yet another great week! The children investigated 'Insulators' and 'Conductors' in science using simple series circuits and were able to explain the importance of them from different view points. In D&T, the children had to research the cost of ingredients for making their own biscuits. They were surprised by the expense of some of the ingredients and will now need to budget their biscuit designs carefully. The children loved celebrating World Book Day and impressed all the adults by their wonderful costumes. The children enjoyed sharing their love of their class text by designing and making scenes from the story and composing scripts to share with other classes. Year 4 finished the week by celebrating Mass this morning with Father Richard and Mr Tasker was really impressed by the clarity and confidence shown by the children reading. Well done!

It has been another fabulous week in Year 5! The children have been working so hard in all of their subjects and they have so much to be proud of! In Geography this week, the children were investigating the positive and negative effects of tourism in mountainous regions and were able to speak so confidently and eloquently in expressing themselves during a class debate on the matter. In DT, the children have begun to find out about what a Micro:Bit is and will be using their coding skills to program these tiny computers! World Book Day was also a HUGE success and Miss McGowan was so proud of all of the fantastic costumes. The children really thought about their love of reading and the books that they enjoy, and it was great to see such a wide range of incredible costumes (thank you to all of our grown ups too for their support and time!). It was also really lovely to see Year 5 spend some time with their Faith Friends in Reception. Year 5 were wonderful reading role models and shared some super stories with Reception Class.  The day was really topped off by Year 5 being announced as the costume winners! What a fab job! Well done Year 5!

Year 6 have had another week where they have all worked very hard. The children had the pleasure of visiting St. Chad's Cathedral and experiencing all of the many wonders it has to offer. The spiritually enriching day consisted of fantastic tours around the beautiful Cathedral, where children learnt lots of fascinating facts regarding the design and building of the Cathedral, as well as the history of how people worship there. The day was a wonderful opportunity to add to Year 6's Confirmation preparation and was rounded off beautifully with a celebration of Mass. A huge thank you to all the hosts who made us feel very welcome. In English, the children have been working hard on researching information on foxes for their reports. Once they gathered their research, they wrote their non-chronological texts. Mrs Freitas is looking forward to reading their work and she believes they have done a fine job! Another exciting event that took place this week was World Book Day.  The children arrived in school with a vibrant range of book day costumes to ignite their true love and passion for reading. A huge thank you to all the families for their support with the costumes. All children looked fantastic!

Visit to Saint Chad's Cathedral

Last Monday, Years 5 and 6 visited Saint Chad’s Cathedral in Birmingham. Saint Chad’s is known across the world as a beautiful building with a remarkable history and rich heritage. We discovered that the Cathedral was built between 1839 and 1841 and was the first Catholic Cathedral built in England since the Reformation. Augustus Welby Pugin was an English architect who had a pioneering role designing the palaces of Westminster, the iconic clock tower of Big Ben and Saint Chad’s Cathedral. After an informative tour of the building including visiting the crypt, we celebrated Holy Mass at this beautiful cathedral. Some of the children had the opportunity to altar serve and take part in the offertory. We all experienced a very spiritual day, which has prepared us for our forthcoming Sacrament of Confirmation in July. Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us on this educational visit.

World Book Day

Children brought their favourite book characters to life today to celebrate World Book Day. The children looked fantastic, and there was a real buzz around school and a real chatter about our favourite books. Staff were keen to get in on the act as well with an great mix of costumes featuring some well-known book characters. Well done to everyone and a big thank you to parents for making such a big effort.

Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to help run the event e.g. selling refreshments. If you would like to get involved, please let Mrs Brown know in the school office.
