Message from Mrs Brocklesby

Ash Wednesday

On Wednesday 14th February, we will be celebrating Ash Wednesday.

What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the very first day of Lent, an important event in the Christian calendar. Also called the Day of the Ashes, Ash Wednesday is a time for Christians to focus on repentance and prayer and get ready for the 40 days of Lent.

When is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday always happens the day after Shrove Tuesday.

Ash Wednesday Traditions

A popular tradition on Ash Wednesday is for members of the congregation to have a cross drawn on their foreheads out of ash.

Ash Wednesday, as the first day of Lent, is the day that Christians begin to give up their chosen item for Lent. Traditionally, Christians should also not consume meat on this day. Traditionally, it's a day of fasting and abstinence.

Father Richard will be celebrating Ash Wednesday Mass at St Wulstan & St Thomas of Canterbury church at 11:00am. All are welcome to attend.

Weekly Round Up From Mrs Warnett

Reception: This week Reception have been learning about Lunar New Year. As part of their learning about the world, the children have been looking at China and the celebration of Lunar New Year. They have found out some of the different traditions that take place during this time and have compared these to some of the traditions that we celebrate in the UK. The children particularly enjoyed finding out about the dragon dance and were keen to make their own dragon. To culminate their learning, the children had their own Lunar New Year party. They spent time making decorations for the classroom and then sat down together for a feast of Chinese food. After the food tasting, the children used the dragon head that they had made; to perform their own dragon dance! They paraded around the school using different instruments to create noise to scare away any bad spirits - just as is done in the parades around the world. The children then took home a lucky red envelope and a fortune cookie to remind them of their celebrations. They have really enjoyed finding out about a different culture and celebration.

KS1

The children in Key Stage 1 have had a busy end to this half term. They have continued to hard work in art by developing their sculpting skills and have created decorated clay tiles. In Geography they used playdough to create a world map to support their learning of the continents.

Year 3

The last week of half term has been a busy one in Year 3. This week in science they finished off their rock’s unit with an experiment. The children were seeing if different rocks could float and if they reacted to acid (vinegar). Before they conducted the experiment, the children had to make a prediction about what they thought might happen and then put the rocks into categories based on all the results that they had collected in the last couple of lessons.

In RE the children were continuing to learn about the order of Mass and where in the Bible the readings come from. In English they have been writing a biography about Mary Anning. The children did a brilliant job, making sure that their writing was organised using sub-headings and paragraphs. Well done Year 3 on another excellent week!

Year 4

Year 4 have such a busy week before half term. On Tuesday, the children revisited some key messages on 'Safer Internet Day' and recognised the importance of staying safe and being respectful while using online platforms and tablets. In science, the children collected data on flowering and non-flowering plants and vertebrates and invertebrates. They recorded and analysed their findings, remembering some of the species that we had found and why we had found them in the locations we did. Yesterday, the children continued their D&T lessons on cooking and nutrition by following a recipe and baking some basic biscuits. The children were great at measuring and mixing ingredients and enjoyed the opportunity to select their own biscuit shapes. Well done and enjoy your break!

Year 5

What a half term and what a week! We could not be prouder of our Year 5 children this week with their unbelievable performance at the Pyramid Concert. It really was wonderful to see all of their hard work come to fruition and it was lovely to see so many grown-ups there to support too, so thank you! Because of this super performance, Miss McGowan couldn’t resist making all of the pupils our star pupils this week! Have a restful half term Year 5, you absolutely deserve it!

Year 6

As part of Safer Internet Week, Year 6 discussed the way young people share images online, and reflected on the potential negative and positive consequences to this. Together they discussed how important it is for young people to ‘inspire change’ and to help others share images positively to make the internet a better place. They started with a quiz, then they had a discussion around the consequences of sharing different types of images and finished with each person creating positive messages that can be shared online. This term, as part of Design and Technology, the Year 6 children have designed  their own playground. After researching various pieces of playground equipment, pupils explored the different structures and then designed three pieces of apparatus using different structures. They then built these using a range of materials and equipment.

Safer Internet Day

Tuesday 6 February 2024

The Internet is a significant part of young people's lives. it has revolutionised the way we communicate, learn and interact. Every year Safter Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging or prevalent online issues, ranging from cyberbullying to avoiding scams. At saint Wulstan's, we have spent this week addressing online safety issues, educating children on how to best protect themselves and others online. On Tuesday we welcomed PCSO Simon Gallagher into our school to deliver an online safety assembly to our children. As part of his PCSO's role, Simon visits schools to provide informative assemblies on current issues.

After his visit, a Year 6 pupil said: "Today PCSO Simon came to talk about online safety. He also spoke about what was age-appropriate looking at Fortnite, Roblox, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook and other online platforms."

World Book Day

On Thursday 7th March 2024, the whole school will be taking part in World Book Day. During the day as well as throughout that week, the children will be taking part in a range of exciting activities based around a chosen book for their class.

As in previous years, we will enjoy dressing up as a book character for the day. This year, the children may choose their own book character. Please see your child’s class teacher if you are unsure about your child’s costume. We are aware that finances are especially difficult in recent years and do encourage you to try to aim for simple costumes that do not require a great deal of expense. Ideally, please try to ensure that the costume reflects a book that your child has read/had read to them.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be back in school week commencing Monday 18 March 2024 - we look forward to seeing you there!
