Our Class

A huge welcome to the Year 1 class page. My aim is to help the children become more independent and further develop their relationships with each other and the wider school community. We believe that every child is special and unique, and we look forward to developing their skills and talents as they continue their learning journey in Year 1. We will celebrate our Faith in God and reinforce positive choices in everything we do. We love to celebrate our success, which we will share with you in web pages, and most importantly we will have fun with our learning!

Our Curriculum

A crucial aspect of Year 1 is ensuring that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One.

The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. The children work hard but we ensure the learning is fun.

Year 1 Essential Information

Each day we learn Phonics through the Read, Write Inc scheme. This provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching reading and writing. We practise sounds to help us to read fluently and write confidently. Every week there is a spelling test. The words given are focused on a specific spelling pattern and will also include more tricky words that children will meet in their reading and need to spell in their writing. The test takes place on a Thursday and the children will take home their new spellings ready to learn for the next week.

We also have daily English, Handwriting and Maths lessons. In addition we have RE and Discovery sessions. Discovery sessions are centred around a theme but give the children the opportunity to link their learning in Science, History, Geography, Art, DT, ICT, PE and Music.

PE - takes place on Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school and it is fully named.

Outdoor learning- see termly letter.

Reading Books - Children are given  reading books which support the phonics learning and help the children to make progress in their reading. Reading is such an important part of learning and one that you can help with at home. Please read daily with your child and fill in their reading record. Books are changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Your child will need to bring these to school each day so that they can read with an adult.

Spellings - As mentioned above spellings are given out on Thursday and the test takes place on the following Thursday. We use the Look, Cover, Write, Check method to practise spellings. Please help your child to practise their spellings.

KIRFs- Please practise Key Instant Recall Facts with your child at home. The KIRFs for Spring 2 are: counting in 2s to 20; 5s to 50 and 10s to 100.
