Our Class
Our Curriculum
Please see the Curriculum Letter below for more detailed information on what your child will be learning this term.
During Year 3, we will read a range of texts both fiction and non fiction and we will study visual literacy materials. In Maths we will develop our understanding from KS1 whilst covering new objectives such as Roman numerals, decimals, 24 hour clock, perimeter and studying numbers up to 1000.
Although we will be working on all kinds of new and exciting areas, the most important work at this stage is to continue to read every day and to develop a love of books. Children should be reading to an adult every night in order to develop their decoding and comprehension skills. We will read with your children once a week during guided reading sessions, if your child is not reading in a group with an adult they will be participating in a variety of independent reading based tasks.
During Year 3 the children will begin participating in weekly Games lessons on a Tuesday. Our Games lessons are combined with those of Year 4, allowing us to take part in a wider variety of team games such as football and netball. Another exciting change in the summer term will be our weekly swimming lesson. This will take place instead of our PE lesson on a Wednesday. We will enjoy units of work such as gymnastics, dance and ball skills.
In RE we follow the curriculum set out by the Diocese of Birmingham which includes units on Belonging, Advent, Christmas, Prayer and Listening to the Word of God at Mass. A major part of our RE learning during Year 3 is our preparation for receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion.
One of the highlights of Year 3 is that it is the year that the children make their First Holy Communion. Although that event takes place in the summer term, preparation always begins in the second half of the Autumn Term.
In Key Stage 2, the children are introduced to a foreign language, and so this year will begin their study of French.
Science, Geography, History , Art, Design and Technology, Music and Computing will all be covered as part of our Cornerstones Creative Curriculum. Our exciting topics include 'Predator!', 'Flow', 'Urban Pioneers' and 'Tremors'.
Children will be given spellings on a Monday which they will be expected to learn for a test on the following Monday. Each week children will be given a piece of English and Maths homework to be completed over the weekend.
