Our Class

Welcome to Year 3. This is the first year of Key Stage 2, which is always an exciting transition for the children. The children are expected to be more responsible for their own learning and organisation. They will work hard on all kinds of new topics and curriculum areas. One of the highlights of Year 3 is that it is the year the children make their First Holy Communion. Although that event takes place in the summer term, preparation always begins in the second half of the utumn term

Our Curriculum

Please see the Curriculum Letter below for more detailed information on what your child will be learning this term.

English

English takes place every day in the morning. This half term our class text is, 'The Firework Maker's Daughter', which also links with our topic called 'Tremors'. During this half term we will focus on writing our own adventure story.

Reading

Your child will continue to bring a book home from our reading scheme (Oxford Reading Tree). Hearing your child read at home on a regular basis in invaluable; even more able readers need to be heard to read regularly and need to discuss with an adult what they have read. The active participation of a parent undoubtedly fosters a positive attitude in the child towards reading and learning in general. In Year 3, we request children read at least 5x a week at home and these reads should be recorded in their home reading diary.

PE

During Year 3, children will participate in a weekly Games lesson every Tuesday and a second PE lesson every Wednesday afternoon. Another exciting change in the summer term will be our weekly swimming lesson. This will take place instead of our Wednesday PE lesson. We will enjoy units of work such as gymnastics, dance, ball skills and team games.

Religious Education

In RE we follow the curriculum set out by the Diocese of Birmingham which includes units on Belonging, Advent, Christmas, Prayer and Listening to the Word of God at Mass. A major part of our RE learning during Year 3 is our preparation for receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion.

One of the highlights of Year 3 is that it is the year that the children make their First Holy Communion. Although that event takes place in the summer term, preparation always begins in the second half of the Autumn Term.

Languages

In Key Stage 2, the children are introduced to a foreign language, and so this year will begin their study of French. During the first unit in French, the children will learn greetings, numbers and colours.

Topic

Science, Geography, History , Art, Design and Technology, Music and Computing will all be covered as part of our creative curriculum. Our exciting topics include 'Stone Age!', 'Canals', 'Technology' , 'Urban Pioneers' and 'Tremors'.

Homework

The children receive new spellings every Monday and should practise their spellings over the week ready for a test the following Monday. Children will also be allocated time each week during school to practise their spellings too.

On Fridays, children will also receive either a maths or English based piece of homework which needs to be handed in by the following week.

The parent curriculum letter will also give details of a variety of home learning projects that the children can attempt over each half term.

Maths

Maths is also taught daily every morning. As a school, we follow the White Rose Curriculum which uses a mastery approach. Every child is encouraged to have a 'can do' attitude and children are encouraged to enjoy working with number. Children will begin to build a deeper understanding of each topic and become more confident mathematicians.
